Adult Drinking Frightens British Children

Children claim they are afraid when seeing their parents and other adults drunk.

Close to a third of UK children are afraid when they see adults drinking too much or getting drunk.

This was after a survey was conducted regarding how children view the widespread epidemic of binge drinking within the UK.

Over half of the 1,234 children surveyed by Childwise for the BBC News-round show and between the ages of 10 to 14, said they had witnessed their parents drunk at some point.

The other half stated that they were not concerned by seeing adults drunk. However 16% surveyed stated that alcohol had made the adults angry and aggressive. 30% claimed that they were frightened.

The team at Childwise claims this just reinforces that more action is required within the UK to prevent the binge drinking culture to escalate even further in the next generation. They claim that 30% is a size-able minority and claimed that concern for the half that were not bothered by adult drinking be looked into and suggested such behaviour had become ingrained into children witnessing such behaviour.

The survey asked girls over the age of 11 why adults would at times drink until they lost control and were sick. Certain girls simply replied that it was just part of “a good night out” for the adults.

This raises serious concerns over the present culture that seems to have gripped the UK for the past decade or so and raises serious questions for our future generation of adults.

The survey discovered that 3% of the children questioned had witnessed their parent or parents drunk several times a week. This equates to one child in every thirty in an average classroom.

The survey also noted that eight out of ten children had witnessed a change in behaviour when observing adults that drink. Some stated it simply made them “happy and funny” whilst a fifth surveyed claimed they became”angry and aggressive”. Others stated that adults acted “stupid and silly”.

The survey also revealed that 19% found that adults would act “strange or different” and 18% claimed that adults would usually “become loud and swear”. 17% claimed that adults would “become dizzy and fall over”.

The concerns were noted by the team, but the shock that 60% of those surveyed claimed they would probably drink alcohol when they are older.

Parents in the UK have already been warned about the dangers of underage drinking.

It appears that children require more education on the effects of alcohol. Indeed there are members of the public who would agree that certain adults should also be seated in the classroom when demonstrating the effects of alcohol.

Sadly drinking is a way to cope here in my country. I see it too often as a waitress in a bar as well as see customers at my other job coming in and acting the fool. It is proof to me that just because one is of age it doesn’t mean they carry wisdom to go a long with it. Good piece.

One thing I don’t like among the many things I like in the UK. I doubt drinking habits will change in the next couple of generations.

Everybody asks, “Who are the role-models guiding the children?” Not many know or pursue to be one of the great role-models themselves.
