African Elephant
This is a review of an article about the illegal hunting of the african elephant for their ivory tusks.
The main subject of this article is the increase of illegally hunting the endangered African elephant for its ivory.
This subject relates to EVST because we were learning about the endangered African elephant
This is a negative story, because poachers, are illegally hunting African elephants for their ivory tusks, and it still remains a problem.
This article is about conservationists trying to halt the illegal hunting of the African elephant. It states that as many as 23,000 of the animals were slaughtered last year. It also says that almost half of Africa’s elephants had been slaughtered in the eight years, before banning the illegal hunting and selling of the elephants valued tusks. Of the 400,000 endangered elephants in the Africa wild, about 130,000 are in Botswana, where they are well protected to the point they have overbred, said Samuel Wasser of the University of Washington. He also said that poaching poses a renewed threat to the survival of regional herds in many countries and to the entire subspecies of forest elephants, which he said is being “annihilated” in central Africa. The article explains that an estimate of 54,000 pounds of ivory were confiscated in 12 international seizures in the year that ended August 2006. However they were only able to seize 10 percent of smuggled contraband. some ivory is wanted for jewelry , and for signature stamps.
