America the Arrogant: Why The World Hates Us
We bring this upon ourselves.
There will be repercussions felt from the tragic shooting at Fort Hood for years to come. The sociopolitical winds are about to change once again, and if the initial wave of sentiment is an accurate gauge, Muslims are once again going to feel these repercussions directly. And that is truly pathetic. This is America! A land where everyone came from somewhere else, and a Nation supposedly built upon the principles of freedom of religion.
Already, the cries are coming forth, the questions that were whispered are now being shouted. Should Muslims be allowed to serve in the military? Is racial profiling really such a bad idea? Can you trust anyone with a ‘rag’ on his head? The conservative right is, by all appearances, salivating over this. And we, being the lemmings that we as a society are, are more that happy to follow along. And why not? We had no issue at all surrendering our rights as American citizens away to the Bush administration… what difference do the rights of a few stupid Muslims make?
The ignorance in America has got to stop. Do we not realize that this kind of blind arrogance is the reason the rest of the world reviles us so? I know, I know…. I’m being unpatriotic, I hate America if I say this, blah, blah, blah. But the elitist attitude which we seem to think we’re obligated to act has been essentially fossilized! We expect to strut around waving our superior might like a phallus, and fully expect the rest of the world to bow down and kiss our feet. A good percentage of Americans are actually upset with President Obama because he had the Audacity to sit down and talk to the leaders of countries who aren’t in our little clubs.
Let’s look at the facts, shall we? We are no longer superior financially. We aren’t the smartest any more, or even close. In fact, if you look at literacy rates, we’re churning out new generations of idiots. Our military superiority is no longer based on anything other than technology and resources; our military has been turned into a job corps for the poor and uneducated. Could it be that the president has the right idea?
Maybe we aren’t superior. Perhaps if we didn’t present ourselves as such a self righteous bunch, the world wouldn’t want to blow us all to hell. We have become a laughingstock. Our newest version of Vietnam is playing out in a similar fashion. Our preaching has gotten old, our soapbox is falling apart. We choose to be pompous in our arrogance. No one is questioning the religion of the shooter in Florida, and he pulled the trigger just as much as the devil in Texas did. Yet here we are, assuming that all Muslims are out to get us. Do you know how many Americans killed Americans last year? But that is the level of ignorance we have succumbed to. Blindly following and quoting the self serving propaganda spewing media into oblivion.
America is supposed to be the leader in the free world. How can we do that living under a shroud of arrogance? We need to start leading by example. Acceptin the beliefs of others. Working with the rest of the world, instead of trying to dominate it. Until we do, nothing will change. We will continue to war, the rest of the world will oblige, and we will continue to send our sons and daughters to pointless deaths. When will enough be enough?

A very wise and humbling description of your own country. You are discovering that the emperor wears no clothes – the wealth you display has been borrowed, you are giving aid to other countries and spending billions on an unwinnable war – I am not saying Canada is perfect, but people like us better.

I couldn’t agree with you more.
I have a “friend” who recently sent me an article full of hate directed toward Obama, because he did exactly what you said. Sat down with Muslim leaders. He also claimed he is going to take away his right to bear arms. I quickly looked up a couple of the Presidents statements that disproved what he said and sent those to him. He was quiet after that, but he made the statement that he didn’t trust any Muslims because they are taught to kill us.
I responded with the statement that he scares me with his attitude. But what is worse, is he is not alone.
And now……God help us all.

Personally I feel The US is the scapegoat of the world. I am an American expat living in Canada because of marriage. I miss my home state of Michigan very much. I get tired of the people who not knowing I am an American say stupid and careless things about The US. At times the things I hear imply that Americans are bigoted people. The hypocracy sickens me greatly. Every country in the world has its problems, however the blame is always placed elsewhere for many of these other countries. Often on wrongly on the US. Political Correctness efforts were never extended to citizens of The US. The citizens of The US are blamed for this or that thing consistantly. If people want to blame specific US policies or companies for things fine. Blaming the citizens of the US for all the ills of the US and the world beyond it is not right. The US is a big country with many regions that disallow wholesale blame. Nothing will change for the better until we stop wholesale blame and look for real solutions. Also Karen’s comment above smacks of an arrogance that is accepted world wide as okay. Yet if Americans take that attitude they are bad. It is not funny even in jest. It’s sad. It hurts real people.

In addition the misconception that everyone in the US is running about like the Fred Phelps crowd or those people screaming USA USA USA at wrestling matches is totally false. Where I am from originally in Flint Michigan people were just trying to survive, feed their families, be happy and get a piece of the so called American dream. However because of a few squeaky wheels and extremists the whole gets painted as something it is not. I really feel the majority of US citizens have lost their arrogance and self esteem for that matter years ago. Those folks that have this country specific arrogance are not exclusive to the US. You will find them in each and every country on Earth and on other planets if their is life.

Mark – the part about people liking Canadians better was partly in jest – but I do believe that in general, people from other countries do see Canada as a peacekeeping nation, with friendly people. At least, that’s what Canadians think that others think of us. I could be wrong, I often am.

People see Canada as a bunch of fun loving, snowboard riding, marijuana smoking, peaceful folk.
People see America as a bunch of fat, greedy, drug dealing, war loving folk.
Granted both are generalizations.
I myself have never riden a snowboard!
This was a great post and I am sure you will get lots of hateful comments. I totally agree with your points…
I want to add on Marks behalf, he agrees with your post too, but is angry with the generalizations that occur against the American public, when its often the policies that the government holds that are what make people in other nations angry, not individual citizens. Mark is not fat by the way.

Hey all of you people, get a grip! America is and always has been a land where freedom granted by the wisdom of our forefathers who wrote the greatest single document in the history of mankind for human rights. Our nation first and foremost was intended to be a republic not a democracy. That very emphasis on freedom is being eroded by liberal, godless, misinformed idiots who do not participate in their government and expect nothing but welfare, socialized medicine, and a hostile world to agree with us 100% of the time. Obama’s administration is destroying all of our constitutional heritage while the public is asleep at the wheel.
As for Canadians. We view you as a bunch of spineless wieners who won’t stand up for anything they believe in out of wanting to be left alone as they harbor terrorists in their midsts and look the other way. I love the Pacific Northwest, but the smell of chicken feces in Canada is much too strong.

Anyone who dislikes their country so much should consider what other options they have on where to live. If I hated America and Americans as much as the author appears to, I certainly would find somewhere else to live! I love my country and the people who make it great. The average hard working Americans who believe in our constitution and love freedom as our way of life. God Bless America.

I do not think this article is about hating one\’s own country but about realizing where the cancer is in the system. The point is that America is not the Goldfish in the aquarium but she is the biggest fish in a pond where there are more than 200 other fishes some which are close behind her and many which are not satisfied by the big fish\’s arrogance and actions. the sooner america understands, the better. take for example the climate negotiations, America is not ready to give an inch away to anyone else. it is understandable that doing so will hurt their economy but for numerous nations, it is not anymore about economy but about physical existence. they are thinking that the rich in order to lead a pompous life is trying to suffocate the the poor to death!

Karen having lived in both countries I can tell you I do not see any difference in the actions of Americans and Canadians. Good and bad in both. I grew up in Michigan near Ontario regionally Michigan and Ontario are together as Great Lakes Region which has become what the world sees a stereotypical Canadian. I now live in Alberta, rural Alberta which reminds me a lot of Texas in landscape and attitude. When we first moved here a person asked my my religious beliefs and I told them, but just they focused on the fact that I incorporate Sufi beliefs and they spread around I was a Muslim terrorist, they omitted the parts about gnostic christian and Kabbalah, Absurdism and such.. I didn’t expect it, now I am careful about who I share anything with or trust. Yeah it just ain’t the US where this stuff happens. There are arrogant rednecks everywhere. Still I rather be back east away from the conservative west, but it is where the woman I love wants to live because of her parents. She is use to it, it is taking me time to adjust. The cities in Alberta are great, but in the country you have to deal with backward attitudes.

I couldn’t DISagree with you more! You are so wrong on so many counts, it’s impossible to list them all in this comment. The world should love us because we showed them a way to be free and still operate as a cohesive nation. We do not need or use dictators or kings, but we re-elect a different person at least once every 8 years, without having a civil war to do it. We have re-built every nation who waged war against us…do you know of any other nation to do that? And the reason our military may have turned into a “peace corps,” is because of the “bleeding heart liberals” who are in power at the moment. What we truly need is a man of Harry Truman’s calibre, who took responsibility for the hard decisions, no matter what the sob sisters thought. You need to do some research into what made this nation great in the first place! It certainly was not airing our faults and weaknesses for our enemies to see.

I live sixty miles from Fort Hood, and I was once a reporter for The Killeen Daily Herald, but I have heard or read no comments here disparaging Muslims or Islam because of the shooting. Texas is stereotypically a very conservative part of the US, but most Texans are not quite as self-centered and unthinking as critics make Americans out to be. Indeed, cultural and ethnic diversity is alive in Central Texas (as well as other parts of the US). A visit to any ethnically and culturally diverse neighborhood in the greater Killeen metropolitan area or the school system where I teach should prove this point.
Although most Americans I know vote their pocketbooks, they are open to different points of view and very sensitive to critical remarks about the US. They also understand they aren\’t quite as cosmopolitan as people from many parts of the world partly because the US is such a large country. Even so, the US remains a nation of immigrants–a place (unlike France and Germany) that continues to absorb different people from around the world into the dominant American culture while also allowing them to keep their ethnic identities.
—Am I proud to be an American? Definitely.
—-Could we do better? Of course.

I too am a Canadian which only qualifies me to have a slightly more objective view of the US. While I love Canada we are not short of idiots either, we’re just smaller and noticed less. However, we don’t seem to give our idiots as much air time as you do!
As individuals Canadians don’t hate Americans as individuals. Our beef has been with your government, especially your last administration. Canadians are, to be sure, much more liberal in politics and are frequently disturbed by the right wing, fear based nature of many of your political administrations. On that note we positively love Barak Obama and there is no visible anti-Americanism happening here now or in Europe.
The US is a very large country having some 10 times the population of Canada. That means you are going to have many more people on the extremer edge of things than us, and holding more extreme views but it also means you have some of the finest people in the world too, and in great number.
I know a lot of American history and I deeply admire many things about your country. You have your problems but you also have more than enough ability to solve them and I have faith that you will. Be proud of yourselves but not, of course, to the point of arrogance. Acknowledge your faults and recognize the accomplishment of others, which is something we all should do of course.

Too many comments to read them all so I apologise if I repeat what has already been said. If more American’s thought like you then some of the problems the US is experiencing would be reduced or may not have happened. Somewhere along the line patriotism turned in to arrogance (”Leader of the free world”, “most powerful man in the world”, which seemed to turn nasty as soon as people began to realise that much of it isn’t true. For example many here in Europe view the leader of China as the most powerful man in the world: With a population about 1 billion larger than the US, vast armed forces (7-8 million soldiers) which are improving in technology very fast indeed, a financial might that overshadows the US. Also American people seem to have total faith in their armed forces, but the rest of the world don’t. Here in the UK we lost more troops to the US in Iraq than to the Iraqis. That’s going to sting for a long time. The US airforce are viewed as a bunch of cowboys who shoot first and identify targets later, then cannot be prosecuted for incompetence as the US government blocks it.
Obama is definitely a big step in the right direction and the US image has already improved markedly. Time will tell whether he is a good president but so far he seems to be a big improvement on Bush.
Well done on an excellent article but I fear you risk being called “unAmerican” by many of your fellow countrymen. Thanks for sharing.

Good to see an American with some appreciation of the World view and a desire to call it how it is.
America is a great country. Its strength and positive influences on the world should be celebrated with pride by its people… but they also have to be willing to admit its, and their, weaknesses too. I’m Scottish… I love my country, I’m proud to be a Scot but I’ll also laugh at the jokes about men wearing skirts, accept our place in history as one of the world’s most glorious losers and revel in our fighting spirit.
The trouble is America (rather than Americans) doesn’t see the irony of where it stands on many things, things that affect the view the World has. We are told America is going to places like Afghanistan to fight against the tyranny of an extreme Fundamentalist Muslim establishment who forced Afghans to follow their strict code and not speak out against it. Meanwhile the anti-muslim emotion in American is oft led by a Fundamentalist Christian establishment that cries out “un-patriotic!!” at anyone who questions their strict code. I’m not going to get into the relative merits of the Christian and Muslim faiths – I’m agnostic and I respect the right of others to believe what they do. People who seek to impose their beliefs on others are what I don’t like.
The US media need to do a much better job of informing the people on World events. Whenever I visit I’m always amazed at how localised news reporting is. Many US citizens will rarely hear about news events outside the boundaries of their own nation, so how can they possibly have an informed view on where they stand on the world stage? If your reply is ‘why should they care?’ Then you’ve just made the point this article’s writer was putting forward.
America needs to learn the lessons from the mistakes “we” made in previous generations. Imperialism is not a good thing, no matter what cause you dress it up under. Without getting into an argument about the validity of a war, the reality is that America’s (and allies) presence in Iraq is mostly about the ownership and supply of oil and gas – as it was at the time of the First World War, and ever since for that matter. As a country who rightfully celebrates its liberation from Imperialist rule, the irony is not lost on others around the globe. (Not to mention the good old “Axis of Evil” being made up of the three nations who planned to switch from trading oil in dollars to euros… which would have seriously messed up the US ability to run massive trade deficits every year)
There is a happy medium between the protectionism of America in the 20’s and 40’s and the imperialism of the more recent era. It’s that happy medium that America now needs to find in order to regain the respect of the World and be able to make a real positive influence.
Last thing… American/Canadian debate: As a Scot in America, I get a much warmer welcome than I do if people think I’m English. The same goes around the world in reverse. Canadians will generally be mistaken for Americans but then get a warmer response when they say, ‘no, I’m actually Canadian’.
P.S. If you run a National Football League then the winners are National Champions… When the whole world is invited to compete, then you can call the winners World Champions!

American history verifies that she has had trouble living up to her extraordinary Ideal, and that struggle continues. Today Americans are being held hostage by a mindset that cloaks itself in patriotism but really intends to safeguard the wealth and priviledges which past injustice has enabled them to gain and hold. There is the attempt to rule America by the influence of the wealthy rather than by democratic means; Thus lobbying is done by organizations and not restricted(as it should be)to individual tax payers. If conservatives really cared about freedom why do they not eliminate a tax system against holders of property when they know such a tax system means Americans are not really secure in their bought homes, since they can be taxed out of them. Or if conservatives cared about freedom, why for years have they seeked to interfere with the freedom of gay people to marry?

The world (or the parts of it I inhabit) hated George W Bush and all he stood for and that did rub off on Americans in general. However, now that Barack Obama is your president the same people love you lot again.
Obama, Clinton (H) et al have a lot to put right but at least it is a possibility and at least their hearts are in the right place.
You do still suffer from bullies amongst your population and in all walks of life but at least now we (some of us in the rest of the world) don’t believe that most of you are like that. The fact that you care about the Muslims there and the repercussions that the tragic incident could lead to is testament to you yourself being the sort of reasonable person that decent people everywhere cannot and do not want to hate.

You aren’t the first or the last to do so. But you tell me which of the world’s national superpowers have the cure for the stupidity you seem to think is unique to America.
…
What’s that sound? Oh, right. Silence. I guess America doesn’t have the monopoly on the particular brand of stupidity you decry.
Nice try, though.
