Aspartame: Charged Again
Added to more than 6,000 diet products in the world, this sugar substitute is once again accused of being carcinogenic. However, this effect is formulated from a single study that was conducted over the rat. It should therefore check first whether these data are extrapolated to humans?
Historically, aspartame has been accused of many evils. This synthetic molecule composed of two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid (found in abundance in the diet), has a sweetening power 200 times higher than conventional sugar. It is not recommended in pregnant women précautionL’aspartame principle was in turn suspected of causing brain tumors, headaches, multiple sclerosis, damage to the retina, liver disease, or even the syndrome of the Gulf War?
This time the results of a study presented by the European Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences based in Bologna, Italy. This test, conducted on 1,800 rats who consumed aspartame, shows that this substance is a carcinogen that can cause lymphomas and leukemias. However, this relationship is only observed in female rats.Note also that this study confirms the absence of link between aspartame and brain tumors.
Another criticism of this experiment, the rats did not receive the exact dose maximum recommended human. This daily intake is 40 mg per kg or 2800 mg for a 70 kg (one tablet contains 18 mg, a can of drink “light” about 185 mg).
Some of them received double, while the other half. It is therefore necessary to confirm these preliminary results, to assess whether they can be extrapolated to humans and to determine the dangerous dose?
However, the authors refer to quickly review the regulations on the use of this artificial sweetener to better protect public health.
Conservative, the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA) acknowledges that this study raises new questions about potential links between exposure to aspartame and the occurrence of cancers other than brain tumors. The results, however, must still be confirmed.
For its part, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said it was “inappropriate to suggest changes in the diets of consumers about aspartame on the basis of information currently available. However, as soon as all data is available, a reassessment of risk and the acceptable daily intake will be committed. “
Aspartame was discovered in 1965. Combining sweetness and low calorie intake, it was quickly and widely adopted by the food industry for the production of low-calorie or low fat.He first was authorized in 1974 in the United States and in France from 1988.

My understanding is that the FDA wouldn’t allow aspartame on the market. The co. that owned the rights to it then hired Donald Rumsfeld who said that he’d call in all of his IOU’s in Washington to get it on the market and he did just that. If that’s what it took to get aspartame on the market I can’t help but wonder how dangerous it is.
