Asteroid 2011 Md Headed for Earth on Monday But Just Passing Through
Asteroid 2011 MD will approach close to earth on Monday, but, won’t come in for a landing. The asteroid is the size of a school bus, but, poses no threat to earth.
LINEAR, a pair of robotic telescopes in Mexico, detected an asteroid about the size of a school bus approaching earth. But, don’t get too excited. The asteroid, which scientists have named Asteroid 2011 MD, will come close to earth, but, poses no threat.
At 7500 miles, Asteroid 2011 MD will come very close to earth on Monday 27, but, not as close as Asteroid 2011 CQ1 did on February 4 of this year, which was 3400 miles from earth. So, at about 1:14 pm ET, look skyward, but, don’t expect to see anything, the asteroid will not be visible except by large telescopes.
If you are in anyway concerned, don’t be. Even if the asteroid entered earth’s atmosphere, it would likely burn up before actually hitting earth. Visit the NASA website for the Asteroid Watch.
