Switzerland is on the brink of facing a backlash across the Muslim World as the country votes in favor of a ban on the construction of minarets on Mosques.

This outcome is now being analysed by various groups, and its repercussions being weighed. While some are fearing a ban on Swiss products world wide by the Muslim nations, others fear a rise in Islamic fundamental tendencies.

Also there is a looming chance of some fundamentalists taking advantage of this decision to rip up hatred and use it to their gain.

The Swiss government on its side has assured the Muslim community that this decision is not against their

religion or culture and it respects the outcome of the vote.

The representatives of the Muslim community in Switzerland have expressed their disappointment over the issue, saying that the supporters of the ban have spread fear and hatred among the majority and succeed in their campaign.

Fast Facts: Minarets are charecteristic artitechtural features of Islamic Mosques. They appeared about 80 years after the death of Prophet Mohammed.

Some famous Minarets include, the Kutub Minar in Delhi – India, Hassan II mosque in Casablanca – Morocco, Great Mosque of Damascus – Syria.

Muslim population in Switzerland is approx 400,000 most of whom are of turkish origin and from former yugoslavia

Tailpiece: This ban has come as a surprise for most and it is to be seen how it is read by various groups, including scholars and socio-religious groups worldwide. That apart this chapter opens doors for further discussion and debate on the hot topic of religious freedom vs fundamentalism yet again.
