Bettering Yourself

What society and the media wants us to look like is not important. What’s important is what we think of ourselves.

In today’s superficial society, there is always a constant reminder that we are not perfect. As if the statue-like-bodied movie stars and magazine models were not enough, we now have incessant pop-ups and commercials asking us about our flab, the whiteness of our teeth, our roots growing out, the stubble on our legs, the list goes on and on! There’s probably one right next to my article right now, huh? I’m sure you didn’t need the reminder from me, I apologize.

You’re probably saying, let’s get to the point here. Tell me what I should buy to get leaner, trimmer, sexier, whiter, tanner, blah blah blah. However, instead of looking for the best product you could use to do what you think will “better yourself,” try looking inside of yourself in ways that you’re better than everyone else. Now, don’t stop reading because you think this is going to become some “mushy-gushy” stuff about loving yourself. If you’re surfing the net thinking you’re not good enough, you need to hear this!

Do you know why you see all those advertisements? It is not because they actually care about how you feel about yourself, they want you money, YOUR MOOLA! Yeah, yeah, yeah, you already knew that. Then why should you fall for it? You are fine the way you are! I mean, who are you basing yourself off of? Whomever society wants you to, so you buy their “bettering yourself products”! I mean, if things were how they were back in the 19th century when the ideal figure was a bit more “full” and even pale, then all that you would see on television and online were food ads and “Ways to make your skin more porcelain!” pop-ups.

So, the next time you see an advertisement and you think “Oh, I need that to be better, cooler, skinnier, etc.”, turn it off or put it down, whatever it is, make it go away. Instead of going to get whatever product the media suggested you needed to be their version of “better”, go get a pen and paper- write down things you love about yourself. It might be your sense of style, your artistic ability, how long you can hold your breath, or how big you can blow a bubble, no ones judging! This list is for you! So instead of getting on the internet and looking up ways to make yourself better, you can refer to your list instead. Remind yourself of the things I said and how silly it is to worry about what society thinks of you. One of my favorite comedians-Ellen Degeneres said “…we spend our time thinking about what other people are thinking about us…when all they’re really thinking about is what we’re thinking about them.” This quote has always stuck with me and could really change your perspective too. This probably wasn’t what you were looking for, but I hope I changed your mind and helped in some way. Just think that perhaps the answer isn’t a product that will make you better, but what you can do to feel better about yourself.
