Big Change in a Small Town: Parents Up in Arms About Meth Lab Operating in a Local Subdivision

by martie in Issues, October 30, 2009

A parent claims she called the police to report a meth lab operating in our town and that nothing is being done. Now other parents are up in arms and looking for a way to close this lab down.

When you have spent most of your life in the same small town, you are bound to notice the changes that occur over the years. Some of these changes are for the better, some are not so good.

Indian River, like many small rural towns has seen an up sweep in crime over the years since I was a child. More and more people from the largest cities are moving to small towns to get away from the “big city” problems. Instead of them escaping these problems, they seem to bring them with them into the little towns across the country.

Where once illegal drugs were practically unheard of in this neck of the woods, they have now gotten quite common. Pot, LSD, and prescription drugs have been causing some real problems here for years. Now Indian River has gotten quite modern. It has a Meth Lab.

What makes this even more of a problem is the woman manufacturing and selling this stuff has chosen to live in a little subdivision right outside of town. This particular subdivision has many junior high school and high school children who live and wander the streets, while their families believe they are fairly safe from harm.

One mother, curious as to why all the teenagers seemed to be frequenting this house when the woman only has one 9 year old child decided to find out what was going on. She actually got the Meth manufacturer to admit what she was doing.

Furious the woman called the police only to be thanked for the information and informed that the police could not just go in there and investigate.

In other words they don’t plan on doing anything to stop the manufacturing of this drug or it’s sale to the children of the community.

Meanwhile parents are frightened. With tomorrow being Halloween many of the parents in the subdivision do not plan on allowing their children to trick or treat in their own neighborhood, electing to take them around to local businesses instead.

Some parents are even talking about posting a sign in the woman’s front yard declaring that Meth manufacturing is occurring within the premises, Others are talking about calling child protective services and reporting the woman’s 9 year old as being in an unsafe household, in the hope that a surprise visit by a social worker will result in them finding some Meth and forcing the police to open an investigation.

Whatever these parents decide to do it is certain that they are sick and tired of their children being sold drugs by adults while the police do nothing. They are determined to put a stop to this lab and put other drug dealers on notice that they are sick and tired of them plying their trade in this town.

Many think that these parents will be ineffective. Perhaps so, but at least they are willing to make the effort to insure the safety of their children.

I would imagine they need to watch her before walking in to arrest her, as frustrating as it must seem to all the parents. I can’t imagine it’s that they will do nothing, but the parents should be careful not to jeopardize any operation that may be set up as a result of the information provided. The idea of the sign is funny but it will tell her to be careful, which isn’t helpful if you want them to catch her. Meth is a nasty drug, but luckily we don’t see much of it over here… yet.

Well at least the parents are trying and not turning their backs. It is the same here. Pensacola was once a small quiet nice place to live and now drugs are everywhere. Last summer a meth lab was found not 2 miles from my home and I always thought I lived in a nice area.

You composed this well. Seems illegal actions get more protection than they should in my book. I just had a neighbor leave with the house now under investigation for meth. People seem to know the loop holes when they are doing the drug activities so they are able to stay in business. Sorry for the innocent children and parents who are trying to raise children correctly. Your area is no different than any named town across the globe.
