Bullying is NOT Acceptable

One in every nine people suffer from depression. Bullying is a major contributor to depression in teenagers. What can we do to minimize the risk of the damage bullying can cause.

Last night I found myself watching the news for about the billionth time only to be shocked to hear of the news of two US teenagers charged with bullying an Irish schoolgirl so relentlessly that she committed suicide. This fact shows the simple truth, that bullying is very harmful, and were found must be dealt with quickly. Just recently a viral video about a vicitm of bullying went viral over the internet, the reaction was widespread support for the victim “Casey Heynes” who fought back. This is the most effective way of dealing with bullying, but not everyone has the courage to stand up to their attacker.

Not only physical bullying can be harmful, but also verbal bullying. The childish rhyme “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me” is far from the truth. Name calling, and slandering can leave deep mental scars that can last a lifetime and cause the person affected to have serious social issues in their future. A simple bruise or broken arm and mend over time, but the mind is much more complex. Depression is a key illness associated with bullying and can lead to suicide frequently.

You might also wish to know, that the only punishment the two teenagers involved received was 100 hours of community service. This seems a bit lenient considering the victim hung herself at the age of 15. What are your thoughts, comments are appreciated.

A sad story indeed. Bulling is never acceptable, but suicide isn’t either. This is where strong family support is needed in the household that teens can relate their problems with their parents for support and solutions. This event and many like it would never occur for anyone with a strong family and “faith”. Well done.
