Capital and Corporal Punishment

How punishment has changed.

Capital and Corporal Punishment

Over the centuries there have been so many forms of punishment used to punish wrong doers. Before the more pain the better, now punishment is more humane.

Some of the most used types of punishment from our past are “death, torture, mutilation, branding, public humiliation, fines, and forfeits of property, banishment, and imprisonment.” These were the most commonly known acts used for punishment. Even today some of these acts still exist but are fairer. Others have been done away with because there was no need for them in our system.

The death penalty still exists and is used still in certain states. Some states do away with the death penalty, while other encourages the use of it. Some states are firm believers in an eye for an eye. It is the people that have influenced each state to be different when it comes to punishment.

Now the main goal to fight crime is deterrence. Rather than focusing on new ways to punish offenders. Society and the system are trying to find new developments for deterring crime before it happens. In the past many people said to commit crimes because they found it to be wrong for the system to be able to legally punish others. Society has influenced the system so much.

From the past punishment with devices such as the brank or cat-o-nine tails. The forms of punishment not have been and will continue to become stronger and better. There will always still be a lot of work to do in the system of punishment. There are libraries of books meant for laws and so forth about the justice system. Imagine how long it will take to revise and fix each book and law. Before pain was good now the slight little pain can cause change. Deterring and rehabilitation is encouraged to help people that have just lost their way. Others that continue to do wrong are looked at as a threat to society and do receive worse punishments such as incarceration, and sometimes death depending on the type and severity of the crime. For example, one murder may encourage the death penalty another murder may encourage life without parole.

Society has many opinions about the death penalty.

One of the longest times a prisoner spent on death row was 24 years. Other prisoners have been known to die in prison before dying on death row. Some individuals feel if they have to pay for them to stay alive then it is unfair or the death penalty is pointless.

In the United states alone each state has different laws and rules about punishment. Some are very strict and others focus on trying to prevent crime before it happens. Either way punishment has come a long way compared to the past methods used for offenders.
