Cell Phone Affect Sperm Quality?

"We assume from these results that the excessive use of mobile phones is associated with low semen quality," Agarwal said. But whether cell phones can directly affect male fertility remains unclear.

The negative impact of mobile phone radiation back under the spotlight. This time, a study claims that excessive use of mobile phones can affect sperm quality.

Link cell phone use and sperm quality revealed by the experts through preliminary research at the Cleveland Clinic, USA. By involving 361pasien clinic, researchers found that the longer men used mobile phones every day, decreasing the number of sperm cells and the greater the percentage of abnormal sperm.

The findings, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility is another fact to question the potential impact of the use of cell phones or wireless devices on health. Some earlier research linking mobile phone radiation often with health problems such as insomnia or disease of brain tumors. Even so, there are also other research that found no association with the cell phone health problem.

The concern over this is the energy of electromagnetic waves emitted by mobile phones could theoretically affect the body’s cells. Moreover, also used in a long time, feared to disrupt the cell phone network by damaging DNA.

But the findings of the experts in Cleveland does not provide evidence that cell phone radiation can damage sperm. “Our results indicate a strong association between cell phone use with decreased semen kualita. However, this does not prove a causal relationship,” said lead researcher Dr. Ashok Agarwal.

In their study, Agarwal and his team studied semen samples from 361 men who visited the infertility clinic for about a year. Researchers also have some kind of questionnaire to all participants to ask about the habit of using mobile phones.

In general, researchers found that the number and quality of sperm cells tend to decrease with increasing number of mobile phone usage time. Men who reported using cell phones in the questionnaire an average of four hours a day has recorded an average number of sperm cells and the lowest number of normal cells / active low.

“We assume from these results that the excessive use of mobile phones is associated with low semen quality,” Agarwal said. But whether cell phones can directly affect male fertility remains unclear.

Agarwal said the team is also currently undertaking two further research to confirm that assumption. In the first study, researchers irradiate semen samples with electromagnetic radiation from cell phones to see and know what the impact will occur.

While in the second study, researchers will continue the initial research involving more number of men. According to Agarwal, this research will also take into account other factors that would influence such as lifestyle (lifestyle) as well as work-related risks that can affect sperm quality.
