Cell Phones are Breaking Down Our Humanity

Cell phones can be our best friends in time of emergency, but while that is all positive, our relationships suffer because of them.

Cell phones are a serious breakdown of rewarding and genuine experiences one person can have with other human beings.  As I travel in the community I see it more and more every day.  People sitting here or there, friends, family, people with children and nobody is talking.  They are so consumed with the cell phone.

It is like the advent of TV in the fifties.  When TV came into the households of America, people became consumed with that as well.  It created a barrier in communication with each other.  Technology is all well and good in many cases but it can also be a hindrance to meaningful experiences that we can share with each other, if we just put the cell phones in their place.

Even with states making laws to refrain from cell phones while driving, still I see it.  Their talking, text writing. They’re taking their eyes and concentration away from the serious task of driving.

There is a place for cell phones in our lives and they are here so why not use them.  That is a given for many reasons.  But when it is time for human interaction, don’t make communication and listening second choice.

People aren’t talking anymore.  Even a simple phone call has been replaced by a text message.  In a social setting, what makes a text less rude than a phone conversation while you are sitting having dinner with friends?  As human beings, we need interaction with others to balance our lives.  Children need to feel as they are being listened to and not told to be quiet because you just have to text your friend about something on some social networking site that can’t possibly wait.

Cell phones have been instrumental in saving lives.  That is a wonderful advantage in the world we live in today with the high rise in crime.  Cell phones provide comfort and give people a sense of being safer on the road and in an emergency it can make the difference between life and death.  All this is positive.

When the time comes for genuine interaction with your fellow human beings, put the cell phone in its place.

You may find that all your relationships are richer for it.
