Censorship
It seems to me that a lot of America today is censoring books. In some states they’ve completely banned the book “Harry Potter” because it is thought to be provoking “witchcraft” and “satanism”. However, I think banning books is wrong because its just another way of taking our rights.
Banning books in my opinion is against learning. By censoring what are the most interesting and favorable books we are deprived of our education. Books are the very base of our learning pyramid. If it is abolished then the pyramid would surely fall. But people don’t understand that when they ban books from one place there are still other places were more 180 copies are being printed, and people can easily get their hands on them. The only thing that comes out of banning books is denying us a method of entertainment that can improve our vocabulary and higher our knowledge. Even religious books are being banned which I think is an outrage!
In the constitution, the first amendment clearly states:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
As we all know, this states that we are entitled to our freedom of speech and press. But what do they mean by freedom exactly? More than once have we been denied of speech and press? Does this mean our freedom is limited? To us freedom is freedom, freedom is everything, but to the government it’s freedom to an extent. If we are entitled to freedom of speech and press, but the government still allows the censorship of books and takes part of it as well, then THERE IS NO FREEDOM!
Art has its major part in society, and not just ours. It’s a pillar of our culture. Writing is a part of art, a part that actually speaks out to people. Poems, Novels, Dramas, Proses and short stories are a lot of different types of writing. If they eliminate one of those or more, how long will it be before they eliminate all writing? It is basically were all of our creativity comes from. If there is no writing, there is no creativity. And thus a part of art and man is chipped away.
Many people ban books not because of their “influence”, but because of money. In their eyes there’s nothing like trying to ban a book that ups their sales. But people who see books as a bad influence wish to eliminate them from their society and thereof, it affects us book readers. If you don’t want your child to read books that you find inappropriate then go ahead, be my guest, but don’t drag us down with you in the process. If you don’t enjoy those books then don’t read them, but it is not fair when you abuse us as well. If this continues our nation would become like Fahrenheit 451 and end in corruption. All of our people will be separated and discriminated between the readers and non-readers. Eventually all of the books would be burned because of thinkers and the percentage of the people who still read would have to live a secret life with the others in fear of confiscation or even prosecution.
