Chile Mines

Mines are dangerous at any time.

In Chile among other hings mines are the hope of the country. In 2010, 33 miners were saved and hauled through a shaft to safety. The president was there to be seen as the miners hit the surface after the mine cave in. It has been revealed that no more safety measures have been put into place almost a year later. The mining company and the politicians seem to be passing the blame where there are approximately 140,000 employees at risk on a daily basis.

It has been revealed that there are independent miners that would scale the mine tunnels themselves. Some would not even have a helmet and be armed with a normal covering over head, cigarettes and a couple of lighters. They would make their way through the tunnel which can be dangerous in part due to the rock formations and tensions causing a crack up and ultimate cave in. Still they take the risk at times going into the mine for at least 200 metres or more. They would then scrape flecks or particles of gold into a bag where he would do this every few weeks and sell it on the black market. He would earn more than the country’s low minimum wage index in total. The work is with risk but this goes with the nature of work involved.

It does seem very risky but if they are desperate they will do anything. A good post.
