Chilled to the Bone: Torture and Abuse in Our Schools

This is a story about the abuse that goes on in our schools that parents seldom know about. I feel that parents have a right to know.

I had been working as a recess aid at Eisenhower Elementary school for three months. My son has special needs and had attended the special needs kindergarten class. One day, I went in his class room and the teachers had my son strapped down in a chair. He was crying and screaming and no one would get him out. Needless to say, I got my son and we pulled him out of the school.  I tried to be professional and keep that and my job separate. Two days later I had my 90 day evaluation. We, the principle and I, decided I would be a substitute Para. I stayed after that day and helped in the older special needs class. All went well. On January 29th, 2009, I was called in to work in that same class room. I didn’t want to go in that day because my stomach had been hurting all night, but something told me I had to go. At approximately 11:20 a.m. I witnessed a horrible experience. One of the children was “being bad”, so the teachers took the child and placed him in a “time out closet” and turned the light out. This child was crying and screaming, didn’t understand what was going on. I walked out to the office, signed out from work, went home and called the police. When I went back up to the school the police were already there. I pulled my daughter from the school. When I spoke to the principle, she acted like it was okay for them to do this to a child. She acted like it was routine, like they do this all the time. I was shocked. She tried to tell me that I didn’t know this child’s history and that if it’s in his IEP, apparently it’s ok. But you know, I don’t believe any parent would say, “Yes, you can put my child in a closet and turn out the light.” And it sure wasn’t in my son’s IEP to be strapped in a chair! Cruelty in schools is always a parent’s nightmare. I am so thankful I went to work that day. There is torture and abuse going on in our schools. I was lucky enough to witness this and report it. I believe the Lord wanted me there that day. I believe He wanted me to be employed at that particular school so I could help put a stop to this abuse in our schools.
