China Has 173 Million Adults With Mental Health Disorders
In the June 13, 2009 issue (vol 373 #9680) of the respected international medical journal “The Lancet” are the results of a mental health survey conducted in China between 2001-2005 by a team of American and Chinese researchers.
From a sampling of 63,004 individuals, the team determined that the prevalence of mental disorders averaged 17.5% of the tested population.
One fourth of those with mental disorders are classed as moderately to severely disabled by their illness.
The survey concludes that about 173 million adults in China were likely to have mental disorders, with as many as 158 million never seeing a professional for their problem.
Mood disorders were more prevalent in women.
Alcohol use disorders were 48 times more prevalent in men.
Mental health issues have surfaced dramatically lately, the last episode involving a knife-wielding man who attacked a kindergarten class of 4-year-olds in eastern China on Thursday, April 29 (2010), slashing 28 children. He also stabbed two teachers and the security guard.
The day before, on Wednesday April 28, one man was executed for killing eight children, while another man, a teacher on medical leave, broke into a primary school and wounded 15 students and a teacher in a knife attack.
The government blames corruption.
“A social environment lacking fairness and justice, in which those who abide by the rules gain nothing, while those who do not can profit, could bring about resistance by the weak against the entire society,” Yu Jianrong of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences was quoted as saying by the Southern Weekly newspaper.

Good place to put the blame “corruption”as the Chinese Government stated. Interesting and appauling stats. It might be higher percentage due to the population there too.

So basically 1 in every 5 people in China you meet will have a mental health disorder. I wonder why? For the record, I don’t agree that it’s corruption.

And if you had the same ratio, of mass killers it could make a big whole in future populations hmm…. cheers
