China’s One Child Policy
About China’s one child policy and how it effects families with more than one child.
China is overpopulated because there are not enough resources for all the people living in china.
Parents with one child get a certificate which gives them special benefits. There is better housing, free health and education, and extra money. The child is given top priority when finding a job. If there is a second child, these benefits are lost. There is special tax on people who more than two children. Every area is given a population quota by the government. Local officials try to see that the quota is kept.
Marriage is not allowed before the age of 20 for women and 22 for men. In some districts, the figures are 25 and 28. Women now have equal rights to men with equal pay and job opportunities. There is child care in crèches and nurseries. This encourages women to stay at work and have fewer children
Some people say Chinese rules are too strict. The government interferes too much in people’s rights to have children. Too much freedom is lost. The answer from China is that people who have no food, bad health and no future, have no freedom anyway. At least these problems are being solved in China.
China’s policy:
- Permission and a certificate needed for all pregnancies.
- Pregnancies without a certificate may be ended by a abortion
- Women with one child must use birth control.
- Couples with two children must be sterilized.
- Couples with two children are often raided in the night and fined.
- Couples with two children are not allowed to send them to school.
- Free contraceptives and birth control.
- Couples with one child get extra wages.
- Couples with one child get better education, health and housing.
