Cockfighting, a Blood Sport in The Philippines

Cockfighting is a blood sport in which a gamecock armed with razor-sharp knife is pitted against a similarly armed opponent for entertainment or gambling.

Fight is declared a draw after a lapse of ten minutes. But there are instances when before that time the cocks are too physically exhausted because of injuries, but are still eager to fight. The scent of another cock resuscitates a dying cock’s strength. In that situation, the referee brings the cock to alternately peck and shuffle at each other. One of the cocks outlasts the other because the latter is either dead or no longer responds because of serious injury. At the end of a fight most of the losing cock is dead. Some winning cocks survive a battle, but others are also killed, seriously wounded or paralyzed. Dead cocks are brought home for food. The owners can agree if the carcass is an additional winning on top of the money or the loser can keep it.

After the fights the wagers either pay or collect money. Owners or spectators go home with more or less money than what he previously had when he entered the arena. But for all of them, one thing is certain- they enjoyed what they saw. Some people might find the sport violent to animals but it is a way for others to entertain themselves.

My brother-in-law enjoys cockfights. He goes to cockfights once a month… I don\’t know why they really are enjoying this kind of gamble sport. I just don\’t like it. It\’s too noisy in the arena…

People do this here too. I feel sorry for the cocks, I think people should not do this anymore, but it’s part of the culture.

It is sad to think that people watch animals harm each other for their entertainment. Very good reporting.

“Are you not entertained?” said the cock gladiator. In some parts of the world, cockfighting is part of the culture. At the end of the day, the fallen cocks end up on the dinner table. There should be laws.

It should be banned. It’s cruel for the animals and I’m not really into gamble. I don’t see how they’re enjoying this so much.

It’s illegal in the UK and not something I agree with, but a good informative post nevertheless.

Banning cockfighting is not the solution, Why not try banning those imported vitamins and supplements, cock breeders invest in..

I’ve seen poor and rich go to the cockfighting arena just for this. Maybe some are just mere onlookers.
Great article. You should be writing more and share it here!

you are all exaggerated.i think its fare because the cocks are given their fair chance to defend theirselves armed with their weapons.and they are purposely bred and designed for this sport.why dont you ask those early american dignified presidents who pioneered this sports.
