Complacency is The Mother of Laziness

When somebody is complacent that he/she can achieve something easily, then laziness steps in, as complacent thoughts and behavior leads to the birth of laziness*.

1. Lack of Deadline:

Laziness is not a habit at all. It is a choice that people make. If there is no deadline at all, then work fills the whole space. This leads to laziness saying that the task can be completed anytime and is thrown in the backburner. Such tasks never get initiated.

2. Why Finish Fast and Be Free:

When there is a deadline longer than required, then the complacent thought that “I have enough time to finish this” would prevent even the best in business from starting this task. Then this leads the person to start it so late that this regular task becomes firefighting and the laziness is blamed upon. Moreover, another thought also surfaces that if this task is completed, then the person may be free afterwards, which would demand more dumping of work. So, better do it slowly and lazily rather than in the speed it deserves.

3. Misjudgment:

When a task is assigned, people underestimate the effort required for completing that task and therefore laze around till they think it would be the right time to start. Later on while doing it they realize that this complacency has cost them their deadline and reputation.

4. Lack Of Interest:

Not all parts of the job are interesting. Nobody has ever been lucky to land up in a dream job. The non-interesting parts would push the person to choose to laze around looking to dump it on to other person.

5. Procrastination Is Easier:

Doing it now requires effort. Doing it later would not require effort right away. So, people laze around enjoying their procrastination. However, they do not realize that it is them who have to do it, whether it is now or the next year and delaying will just worsen the situation.

* For those who may ask wittily, “if complacency is the mother of laziness, then who is the father?” The answer would be “Irresponsibility”. Yes, laziness is born out of irresponsibility and complacency.
