Computer Games Pitfalls to Watch Out!
While there are many games that can improve the productivity, there are quite a few games which cause severe adverse effects on the players. Even the good ones, when abused, turn nasty.
1. Addiction:
The computer games are very addictive in nature. While other outdoor games come with lots of constraints, computer games need just a keyboard and mouse or joystick. With many PS2, PS3 and even PSX coming up, the computer itself is not required. The system is on its own. The young children and adolescents can fall prey to this addiction and would occupy their mind completely making them perform poorly towards real life needs, such as studies and extracurricular activities.
2. Time-Waster:
This is a number one time-waster when not used wisely. Time flies in light speed and hours would have passed before one realizes that he or she is engrossed in this mindless game. Too much exercise to the mind also dulls the mind.
3. Mouse-Potato:
Many children prefer to spend their pocket money in computer games in the game consoles than to go and get something nice to them – healthy snack, thought provoking books, coloring books, etc. They are transforming from being couch potatoes before the stupid boxes to becoming mouse potatoes in front of the idiot boxes and the typewriter!
4. Violence:
Many games involve huge amount of violence such has hitting each other, making them bleed, killing the opponents, etc. In a few road rage games, the player earns points for hitting the traffic cop on the way. So, when they grow up, what respect would they show to traffic rules or these cops! The problem is that the young adults and children do not categorically define the line where the virtual reality ends and actual reality begins. So, they tend to become more aggressive, think it is okay to hit each other even in real life (just because they are good in the wrestling or kick-boxing game on computers!)
5. Stressful:
Playing computer games occasionally is a stress buster, whereas excessive abuse of computer games can be very stressful. The stress of getting more points, the stress of reaching next levels and quickly, etc, can be devastating to a normal brain.
6. Nervous Weakness:
The nerves in the palms and arms are very delicate. To use them excessively is as good as digging a grave for them. So, such kids would end up in nervous weakness and other neurological problems. Moreover, continuously sitting will also produce muscular problems such as cramps, neck and back pain etc.
7. Bone and Joint Problems:
Remember the carpal tunnel syndrome that would strike a person if he or she does not use the keyboard wisely. Similar effects are possible as kids are not well educated about these problems. Moreover, they become more liable to arthritis problems in the finger joints.
Every technological advance is a double edged sword that can give huge benefits if well used and will create irreversible damage if abused. So, choose the right type of games and play them only occasionally and for only a few minutes.

Well written, and very true. I guess it’s a sign of mental weakness in adults, who allow themselves to sink into being addicted players. As it goes for kids, well, it’s parents’ job as usual to educate and control the situation.

Every point is very much agreeable. One does not remain a “social animal” anymore, which itself is a big hazard. Well written Raj.

You’re right. I’ve become a bit of a mouse potato already.
