Concepts of Discrimination

In today’s world, we are still faced with the problems of discrimination and its effects. Discrimination is the act or practice of discrediting an individual based on their age, race, sex, disability, religion, or any other factors that does not pertain to the individual’s merit.

In today’s world we are still faced with the problems of discrimination and its affects. Discrimination is the act or practice of discrediting an individual based on their age, race, sex, disability, religion or any other factors that does not pertain to the individual’s merit. (”Discrimination”, 2008)

Discrimination has many forms some of which are mentioned above. Some of the affects of discrimination on society we observe everyday sometimes and some individuals with little to no acknowledgment at all. Take stereotyping for instance, it’s basically the same thing as discriminating someone just that now in that persons mind they have a category where that person of like traits fit based on these attributes rather than who they are as an individual. Normally with most people you already put some in a category the first 3 seconds you come into contact with them. (Hogan, 2005, p. 16) It a horrible fact, but in many cases its true. The one thing I like to point out is that discrimination is an act and or practice, and once you base a decision on the age, sex, race, etc. of an individual you are practicing such.

Now that being said, would you walk into an interview for an office position wearing skater jeans and a band Tee-shirt? Of course not! Well unless you really just didn’t want the chance of getting that job in the first place. Why is that? Because you know you are first judge on your appearance when you walk into an interview. Is it a form of discrimination? Of course it is! But, it isn’t normally upheld by the law, so is it ethical? No it’s not! But, it’s truly how the world works presently and honestly a majority of you understand the concept of the “first impression.” Because you are aware of the concept of being prejudged, you prepare for that interview.

What if after reading this you want to make a change to be able to sue a potential employer because they refused to even start the interview because you were waiting in the lobby with your “Sponge Bob Square Pants” Pajamas and pink bunny slippers. I hate to break it to you, actually… I don’t; it’s not going to happen! Can we fight most discrimination acts? Yes we can! We can take affirmative action or making an effort to change the wrong doings onto others being harassed or denied there human rights.

People who made this conscious effort to lead movements towards change, who amended laws for Civil Rights, are great men and women. They gave their next generation hope that one day we can all be equal and their Ideas and courage are not forgotten. More over their strides have made it possible for a woman to have the same opportunities as a man (excluding the Military in some aspects.), for an individual of any race to be as successful as they strive to be as an individual. Of course sadly enough discrimination is still present in today’s society but the upside of that is due to the individuals and groups, who have, who are and who will be taking affirmative action. We now have laws to protect us from being prejudged.
