Consumerism

The next time you’re about to buy something, think; do you really need this item?

A last reason that makes people a throw-away society is in my opinion, the reason that applies to the most people; trends. Just like the latest fashion trends, it makes you want to fit in, to have all these special stuff making you look “cool.” Maybe everyone else has one in your school or workplace and if you didn’t have it then they’d think you’re poor, or outdated and boring. Therefore, it gives you the urge to go out and buy one for yourself; let it be the latest cell phone or computer. Or, you might have heard a lot of good things about this little/huge gadget. Perhaps everyone’s talking about it and either wants or has one, so it’s now known as the new “trend.” Trends can make some people not think before buying. Sure, everyone has one, but will you really have use of it? Will you buy it and replace your $200 dollar cell phone with an un-functional one that you don’t know how to use? Remember, trends get outdated and replaced, they constantly change and the stuff you bought before will be all forgotten. What a good way to waste money.

In the end, people are a throw away society. You may not be as bad as the next person, but that still doesn’t change the fact that you still contribute to it. One benefit of being a throw away society is that a part of the money we pay goes to help our education, or keeps a person’s job. But like stated before, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. Always think before acting, let it be throwing away helpful goods and purchasing a newer one so you can have the happiness of saying you owned the latest thing that’s “in,” because, do you really need it?
