COP 16 Cancun Summit Starts Today, But The Media Doesn’t Care
Are you surprised to learn that COP 16 Cancun summit on climate change starts today in Mexico? The media doesn’t care, so its not all your fault.
International and the US media are essentially fulfilling the wishes of climate change deniers by ignoring COP 16 summit. Right now thy would rather splash mud around about the Wikileaks documents release than get serious about climate change.
This is yet another case of misplaced priority of the media. They routinely ignore the serious and pressing matter and run after hot potato of the moment. Remember the coverage Tiger Woods sex scandal got (Spring 2010), compared to that the rise in racial hatred against President Obama and also the far right was given far less coverage.
Even the European is guilty of arrogance.They have for long ignored the issue of the Roma in Europe,and yet they have time to run after Prince William and his fiancée.
Now that COP 16 summit has begun amidst very limited media attention, there is no one to hold the negotiators accountable and keep the pressure on. I mean, look at the example of sheer insensitivity, BBC has sent only one journalist to cover the summit. Compare that to the hordes they send to cover useless Royal events and meaningless political circuses around the world.
It is clear that the media doesn’t care about the real issues, it is all about ratings and the bottom line for them. So, we as citizens have to be informed and not dependent on the “lame stream” media for the information.
