Coronation Street
A large piece of high marked GCSE coursework.
It’s an issue that is becoming more prominent in this society and it is an issue that the church needs to respond to. Since televising this episode gay legal agreements have been drawn up that now give them the same rights as married couples. This theme is important to Christians, as they may believe in gay marriage, and if their church is stopping the, then they could lose touch with their religion, or religious beliefs. Also, gay people may also be Christians, and therefore, Christianity needs to respond to the members of its community, in a way that will please everyone. Plus, the bible says that everyone is equal, and should be accepted. So, there is no reason for Christianity to not accept homosexual people.
The vicar, Jessica was shown in a very good light in this episode. She came through to the viewing audience as a very young modern style of vicar. She was sincere and sympathetic to Roy and Hayley. She didn’t lie to the journalists; she just pulled the wool over their eyes.
Emily bishop disapproved of Roy and Hayley’s wedding, she is a very traditional Christian. She said that “Les was not alone in hating what he did not understand”. She later realised that love was more important and she acted upon the teachings of Jesus to “Love your neighbour as yourself”. Emily attended and supported Roy and Hayley’s cafe wedding at the end.
People may say that Roy and Hayley should have had the wedding in the church, and have been open to the press to see what prejudice would come out in their papers. Les could also have said his view on the matter, rather than making him seem a bigot. It might have been nice to see what Jessica’s superiors would have said in the church about her agreement to marry two men together, knowing she was against the teachings of the bible, god and Jesus.
I think a soap opera was a good way of dealing with this issue, as subconsciously you take in information from them, and it makes you think. Should gay marriage, or the marriage of two men, or women, be made legal? Also, millions of people watch soap operas, therefore, millions of people would see this drama, and think about it. They may converse with family members about it, or may just subconsciously recognise it as a changing part of society.
