An ocean breeze with the bird flying, and the sun is hanging high with an horizon of a fresh day with a fresh start. Ah, I can breathe again, and feel that air of freedom. It wasn’t always like that. The place is Cooperstown, New York, and it all started on February 23, 1977. As it turned out, an unknowingly John Murray’s life became a detour with no direction. As he walked too the corner store too buy some groceries, and some cigarettes, a robbery was taking place while he was enroute. The robber, and Mr. Murray had wore identical outfits, but weren’t related, but just a acquaintance. The robber had escaped the seen, but when the police were summoned, and Mr. Murray was walking around the aisle, guns were drewn at John Murray too which he was surprised and confused.
He didn’t have a clue is too what happened, but only the description of suspect which he matched by the store owner. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Mr. Murray was arrested and fingerprinted, and given his rights. He was first placed in a holding cell at police headquarters on Warlow Street in Cooperstown, but was laterw transferred to Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York awaiting his trial. In April 22, 1977, Mr. Murray’s trial came up, and it was the Judge and Jury deciding his fate. The store owner gave his account of what transpired, and Mr. Murray gave his account of being the wrong suspect, and that the real suspect is out, and roaming free. Opening statements were made during and in between along with closing remarks. Judge Honor asked the Jury to deviate. In the Jury’s chamber, there were questions after questions in determining the final analysis. There was careful talk, but with precise thinking. They all remembered what was said, and without a doubt. However, the jury missed out on one particular element, the wrong man was picked up. The jury then returned back to the courtroom, and the judge asked, “Has the jury reached a verdict”? The Jury Foreman said “Yes, we find the defendant quilty of all counts. A commotion could be heard in the courtroom, and the judge ordered quite it in the court. Mr. Murray realized justice wasn’t correct, and his lawyer felt the same way. The judge had ordered death sentence on April 26 at midnight. In the critical hour, the Mr. Murray’s lawyer did some research of his own. The real suspect had just robbed another store, and the police were already on the sight. Ah, it’s almost midnight, we have to get too the warden quickly as we have only minutes to spare. The Correction Officer was about to needle the lethal injection, but just then, the Warden ordered stop, and released Mr. Murray, and his name was cleared at 11:59 PM, a minute from the devil’s calling. It was life seen today, and tomorrow’s conclusion ending the chapter of jail cell with freedom time of Mr. Murray’s life seen beyond in tomorrow’s mirror.
