Degree The New Deploma
The new blinders HR departments have.
I am unemployed with a lot of others in my area. I spend hours upon hours searching for jobs and filling out applications. careerbuilder.com, monster.com, ohiomeansjobs.gov USAjobs.gov even craigslist.com the ads are all starting to say the same thing. A vast majority of jobs now require a degree in the area you are applying for.
A friend of mine recently landed a job. The job is selling roof repair, he wasn’t hired for having a sales background but for having a BA, the employer even stated this his first day on the job. The training lasted all of a day and now they expect him to generate clients from thin air. I’m not saying it would be even a good job for someone with a sales background but for someone with out one…
Just now i did a search on ohiomeansjobs for security. PT guard job paying $8.00 an hour. Do they require a gun permit? Nope! Do they want military? Nope. Do they want a criminal justice degree? Yep! $8.00 an hour, part time and they are wanting a 4 year degree! That 4 year degree at a college only charging $6,000 per year is still $24,000 in debt. It would take that guard 3000 of work to pay that debt off. That’s no including the basics of food clothing and shelter.
I understand it is a part time job, however the issue is experience is becoming worthless while i slip of paper is meaning more and more. Would you rather have a pilot on your next flight with a 4 year degree and the minimum level of flight experience in the cockpit of your next flight or someone with out the 4 year degree but 4 years flight experience?
We are now telling our youth that a slip of paper and a massive debt is more important than experience gained from actually working. This shift to degree needed to be a fry cook will only expand the poverty line. You now graduate from high school and now are required to go on to get a degree in a career field that you know nothing about. All the while building up debt, just so we can have a minimum wage job and no hope of paying off the debt they have incurred.
