Designer Babies.
Science and technology…changing our lives forever???
A child introducing himself …Hi…I am xyz. I am 4 years old. I have a brother and two fathers….or may be two mothers….Fifteen years back, this would have been an outright blasphemy. How could anyone have two fathers or for that matter two mothers? I remember dialogues from erstwhile Malayalam movies in which the hero called out to his adversaries saying, “Come out and face me if you are born to one father” or the routine bollywood dialogue…. “If you indeed had your mother’s milk, show me this or that”. Not now a days! The concept of a ‘family’ is fast changing. I write this after reading an article which has the photograph of a doc holding a baby in each hand, flanked by two happy (read gay) guys with the title, “gay parents get twin joy”. Each donated a sperm to fertilize two eggs from an unknown Indian mother. Not twins in actual sense, but born to two different fathers from a single mother in one go!!!
A combined effort of Science and Technology can create wonders. Well, there are innumerable permutations and combinations these days. Human rights have made unbelievable advances and what could have been an impossible feat in the past, whether for moral or scientific reasons, is now slowly becoming an integral part of our society and surprisingly, it’s not a big deal. Our society is evolving and this evolution is certainly eroding our age old practices. At the speed that we are going, few years down the line, maybe we will not need a mother, or a father, or a marriage, or a family. Future citizens will probably have two grandfathers…perhaps two grandmothers. Or better still, no physical relatives…may be one could go baby shopping (this concept is not entirely new).May be we will have huge banks of sperms and eggs of different varieties. May be the menu will read…Indian sperm, Asian, English, German….classified as per the characteristic of donor, eggs for…curly hair, blue eyes, brown skin, Mongolian eyes, tall, short, wide hips, heavy chest blah blah blah !!!
Mix n Match to your taste! Designer Babies-not a far fetched idea eh? With due respect to the current generation, somehow I am quite happy and content with how things went for me ;)
…I must classify as an unintelligent moron for sure !!!!

I agree with you completely Angelji, values order society and eliminates social chaos and confusion, am not sure whether the words “mom” or “dad” will exist any more in a situation like this!

I remember those filmy dialogues in Bollywood movies. You have raised a critical point. I appreciate your arguments.

Society really has taken a drop. Not that it was much of anything to begin with.

While it may seem to go against the will of God, i believe further study into this area of science will help to sustain the survival of our species. Let’s say that the last man and woman on earth are both sterile, if they did not need to use the normal method of procreation the species could still survive.

Yes, I know what you mean. The definition of ‘family’ is way more different than it was when I was a kid.
