by I passed a couple diesel fuel pumps at a fuel shop yesterday that reminded me about how New Mexico taxes diesel. I had learned that back while hauling fuel and driving my father’s tractor.

The sate of New Mexico doesn’t tax all the diesel fuel sold in it. They just tax the diesel sold to folk who drive automobiles with diesel engines. The farmers and ranchers around the state are not taxed. The diesel fuel the purchase is tax free. Why shouldn’t farmers pay as much fuel taxation as everyone else?

In order to make it easy to see if the diesel in any tractor trailer is the right kind the state has made the fuel companies darken the kind that has been taxed. The kind them farmer purchase isa bit lighter. This makes it a lot easier for some inspector from the highway department to see if the diesel in the tractor traitor fuel tanks have actually been fully paid for or not. Does every farmer hit some truck stop to siphon diesel out of tractor fuel tanks?
Diesel Taxation Trucker Memory
Many retired long haul truckers should remember this factor. Most of them can remember what kinds of troubles happen while they sleep as the diesel gets ripped off. A few of those truckers, while looking back at the days they were trucking can even remember getting some diesel fuel ripped off. Some of them can even tell how to use your thumb on the end of some hose to get the thievery started. Why can’t any of them remember having to actually lock the diesel fuel tank cap to keep anything from actually getting stolen from it?
Diesel Taxation Purchases
Farmers usually have a diesel fuel tank sitting above ground out by one of their sheds. They can easily order some diesel that isn’t taxed. Others have to occasionally hit some gasoline station to get the tractor fuel tank filled up. Most of these farmers know which station is sophisticated enough to allow them to purchase some diesel without having to pay any sales taxes on it. There are even some some farmers that have to purchase some diesel for theirfather’s tractor at a regular gas station. They just have to go inside and point to the tractor standing by itself out to the clerk on duty. It would help them save a lot of money to point the tractor out to the clerk while telling how much diesel they want to purchase. All of these farmers must make sure the gasoline station can sell some diesel without charging any sales tax for it. Why do farmers get to save so much money?
