Discount Medspa Shut Down by Fda for Illegally Selling Prescription Botox-like Substance

Laurie D’Alleva and Discount Medspa have been shut down for illegal selling of Dysport, a drug similar to Botox.

Discount Webspa is an online site which has been selling Dysport, nicknamed “The Freeze,” a controlled prescription drug similar to the popular Botox.  While the domain is registered to Cristie Stone, it is a Texas woman named Laurie D’Alleva who has been prompting customers to purchase and inject themselves at home with Dysport, FDA approved for use in the US just a few months ago. Dysport is the first real competitor of Botox, the most popular cosmetic treatment in the U.S., as reported by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In 2008, doctors performed more than 2.4 million Botox procedures. While Dysport itself is legal, illegal access and sale of it is not.  Dysport is a prescription-only drug, and Laurie D’Alleva is not a qualified prescriber.  She appears to be an ordinary woman coaxing customers to engage in a dubious, and dangerous, procedure in the privacy of their homes to “freeze” youthfulness into their faces (shudder).D’Alleva directs potential customers to YouTube to watch a video of herself demonstrating the procedure, but many of those who have tried it at home end up with lopsided results, giving their faces all the beauty of a comical Halloween mask.  Factor into that the risk for infections or allegic reactions, and you have the perfect formula for disaster.People go to dangerous and expensive means in the on-going quest for appearing, at least on the outside, to be perpetually ageless.  The obsession, more often than not, gets in the way of common sense, so Discount Webspa is by no means the first site caught selling illegal products to desparate consumers. But “The Freeze” site, fortunately, has been caught out, and while the FDA investigates Discount Medspa and its illegal sales of Dysport, among other dubious products, the website has been given the freeze, so to speak.*You can access the video mentioned in this article through YouTube or throught the websites listed below.Sources:http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474977931803&grpId=3659174697244816&nav=Groupspacehttp://blog.taragana.com/health/2009/12/05/discount-medspa-going-to-jail-16740/
