Do Cartoons Make Our Children Dumb?

Do cartoons make our children dumb by showing them acts of stupidity?

Everyone at one time or another liked to watch cartoons. It may have been Scooby Doo or Josie and the Pussy cats. It may have even been Disney movies . Or it could be something more modern like Dora the Explorer. Theres a wide selection now for people to watch. There is now anime, educational and humerous cartoons to watch on the T.V, a computer or an I-pod. The possibilities are endless these days. While the are some really good educational cartoons for young children to watch, there are also some cartoons that show extreame levels of idocy they can also watch.

At a young age, children’s minds are very impressionable. They will mimick behaviors they see. They watch thier parents, other children and shows on the T.V. Those displays of behavior may become a child’s behavior in the future. Wether they are good behaviors or bad ones, a child can still learn them. The more a child watches the more likely they are to adopt what they see. How much television a child watches is generally up to thier parents or caregivers. What shows they watch are usually up to the child his or herself. A child is not the best person to choose a good show to watch due to thier youth.

There are several all cartoon channels on cable these days. Cartoon network and the Disney channel to name a few. Most cartoons intended for a baby or a toddler are mostly educational cartoons. Dora the explorer teaches a child to identify shapes, speak spanish and other useful things. But for older children, they are no longer interested in educational shows. They will watch cartoons they find funny. Cartoons like Ed, Edd and Eddy, they humor children by acts of stupidity and mild violence. While older children may not want to watch educational shows anymore, thier minds are still very impressionable. They enjoy watching various cartoons where the characters do random acts of stupidity such as smacking each other with a random assortment of items.

Watching thier favorite cartoons doing moronic things over and over again, they will most likely begin to imitiate what they see. The children who begin to imitiate these cartoons are not learning more worthwhile lessons. They may not be as intelligent as those children who are not exposed to such cartoons. The cartoon channels are producing more of the moronic cartoons which give them a higher profit when children watch them. As time progresses, new cartoons seem to get more and more stupid and teaches our children more and more bad behaviors.

These bad behaviors can become bad habits in the children. And these can get worse as a child gets older. And when a child reaches school age, this can present a huge problem. The child will not be wanting to learn worthwhile lessons, but instead keep watching those bad cartoons. If cartoons designed to older children were more educational , yet still enjoyable to view, our children would still continue to be educated as they were at a younger age. While making such cartoons may be hard to do, it is not impossable. We should limit our older chilren seeing the stupid acts of some cartoon shows so they will be more prone to learning things more worthwhile.

When I was young, I watched
Spiderman, X-men, BeastWars, Dexter’s lab, Johnny Bravo, The Mask

And I should point out – Tom and Jerry
Looney Tunes (before Mr. Blanc and C.Jones left, I consider a peak in cartoon making in history), Darkwing duck and finally Angry Bievers (increadibely fun and witty cartoon)

Is Megas XLR modern? Well, they caught my eye with original use of old idea (giant transformer robots.).

What can I comment on modern cartoons? They are mostly dumb, surreal, do not contain witty jokes (it’s like a rule). They expect the viewer not to think much. If it’s sderious, they overact, If fun the jokes are lame. If it’s superhero cartoon(umm.. ben10 and this fantastic4 stuff etc.), they are so predictable it makes you puke and wonder what your kids IQ is now.. :D

So resume – nowdays they make cheaper cartoons(making blocky background is easy) without a soul.
They try to make unrealistic situations or persons funny.

Surreal jokes can be funny (Shep in the Big city), however I doubt kids mind can actually process absurd Monty Python style parodies.
