Do Team Sports Hurt Society?

Team sports are completely pointless. They damage society and do much more harm than good in the long run.

I’ve never understood why so many people are obsessed with sports. To me, team sports are boring and a waste of time, whether you are playing or watching. Aside from being completely pointless, they give kids poor values and trivialize the importance of real learning and education. The importance that we tend to place on sports damages society as a whole.

First of all, sports are unnecessary in schools. They take focus away from academics and actual education. Team sports encourage children to value only the people with athletic ability and to ostracize the children who are less athletic. This creates a hierarchical caste system in which those who play sports are seen as superior to the “nerds” and the un-athletic, giving intelligent kids, who would otherwise aspire to greatness, low self-esteem. When kids are constantly picked last in gym class or on the playground for teams, they may be scarred for life and feel inferior as adults, whereas the kids who are picked first will develop feelings of superiority and become horrible people as adults. The so-called jocks grow up expecting everything to be handed to them with no real work on their part for the simply fact that they can throw or kick a ball. The kids who could otherwise go on to do great things with their lives may end up questioning their own worth and lose motivation to try even try anything due to fear of rejection and failure, whereas the kids who are good at sports never learn to do any thing with their minds because society tells them that being good at some stupid game is enough to succeed in life. Everyone loses.

The argument that sports encourage teamwork and help kids learn to work together is flawed. This could be accomplished much easier by having children work in groups for assignments and projects in which students have to work together to complete the project that is in some way connected to the curriculum. Students could be required to enter team competitions that are based around academic subjects to learn team-building skills while actually learning something.

Team sports devalue individuality and promote thinking as part of a collective. When you are part of a team, even your individual accomplishments are regarded as accomplishments of the team as a whole. Team sports destroy the ability for kids to think for themselves as adults.

In high school, I also saw a lot of teachers being much more lenient with the students who were part of a sports team (usually football, but I saw it with other sports such as cross-country and basketball as well). Usually the teachers who are also coaches in a particular sport do this most often, but other teachers do it as well. This only teaches students that, as long as they can throw a ball or run fast, that they don’t have to think or do any real work.

I see some violence in this spots and some people are over done with their self esteem; though it is entertaining, that is outrageously paid position!

Yeah thats completely true! I hate team sports, and watching sports… At school a while ago there was an “about me” forum the class had to fill out. Two of the questions were:

What is your favorite team sport. I answered: N/A

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV. I answered: N/A

    Nice article! ;-)

If they want the ball through the basket, someone get a ladder and put it through, then that’s it, everyone go read a book, spend energy on making world a better place.

Where did I say that physical activity is bad? Kids should be exercising. And there are other types of activities that schools could provide to teach teamwork, such as group projects. You can’t deny the fact that sports get in the way of actual learning when you have teachers not giving out homework the day before a big game or going easy on the jocks when they didn’t bother to study. Kids should be learning skills that will actually help them to get a job and to think for themselves when they get out into the real world, rather than learning how to throw a ball around while thinking they are superior because of a minor skill. All sports do is create an hierarchy that favors the kids with no real brains or talent outside of sports, and makes the smart kids feel bad about themselves when, in fact, they should be the ones being recognized for their achievements.

Though you’re right that not giving out homework before a big game does get in the way of actual learning, the minor effect of this favorism is negligible. If a jock is an absolute idiot, and doesn’t study and fails all of his tests he will fail the class regardless of what teacher he has. What you are talking about is a case where a jock might have say an B+, and since the teacher likes the football team gives him an A. In the real world, using any advantage to get on a superiors good side will be a beneficial skill. The team sport obviously will ostracize people who are unathletic. It is ignorant to think everyone attains the same skill-sets. Do you see jocks who are not musically talented complain about being ostracized? Kids who are unathletic will realize they will benefit once they uncover the special skills they are good at.
As of myself, I am a college wrestler, with a current 4.0 GPA studying pre-med my Freshman year. I ensure you, being on a sports team has not given me any strictly academic unfair advantages. It is a great way to get accepted to colleges, for it shows you are well-rounded, but on the contrary someone who is not a jock has plenty of ways they can show that they are multifaceted. I’m sorry, but I just cannot agree with your opinions. Smart people get recognized for being intelligent, regardless of their extracurricular activities.
