Do Team Sports Hurt Society?

Team sports are completely pointless. They damage society and do much more harm than good in the long run.

I also have a problem with professional and college sports. Sports fans get way to into the games. I find it extremely sad that so many fans’ identities are based entirely on their favorite sports teams. When their team loses, they take it so personally and feel as though they, themselves, are failures in some cases. This cannot be psychologically healthy. I also find it disturbing that so many people cause violent riots after a game doesn’t go the way they want and that people hate other people for the simple fact that they like a different team. If racism and sexism weren’t already bad enough, now we have to discriminate based on sports team fandom. It’s kind of ridiculous when you think about it.

It’s also really annoying when you want to watch a television show, only to find that it’s being preempted by extra innings of a baseball game. I find watching sports to be a pointless activity. Even though I don’t like team sports, I’d much rather play than just sit there watching someone else play. It’s the same way I feel about watching other people play video games and pornography.

I can see watching sports that you, yourself, actively participate in to study techniques, but I know that 90% of the people who watch games on television or go to live sporting events couldn’t play their favorite sport if their lives depended on it (considering the sport’s fan’s diet of beer, hot dogs, and chicken wings). Perhaps watching sports is simply a social thing and an excuse to drink for most people. But there are plenty of other ways to socialize.

I do enjoy some individual sports, such as fencing and snowboarding, but I have no interest in watching other people compete in these sports. What enjoyment can you possibly get out of watching someone else play a game? Especially when you consider that these people are getting paid millions just to play a game that you probably played for fun on the playground as a child, whereas you have to work 40 hours a week doing actual work and can still barely afford to pay your bills.

Don’t you think that people with jobs that are of actual importance, such as teachers or police officers, should be making more money than someone who just throws a ball? What kind of message is it sending to children when they see that society values a football player more than people who actually make a difference? What do kids think when they see these athletes that they idolize getting busted for using steroids or committing various crimes and then getting away with it?

Playing sports could be a fun activity to do to get exercise (though there are plenty of other things you can do to for exercise, such as yoga or jogging), but they have no place in schools or on television. Our society takes sports way too far and team sports do much more harm than good in the long run.

I see some violence in this spots and some people are over done with their self esteem; though it is entertaining, that is outrageously paid position!

Yeah thats completely true! I hate team sports, and watching sports… At school a while ago there was an “about me” forum the class had to fill out. Two of the questions were:

What is your favorite team sport. I answered: N/A

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV. I answered: N/A

    Nice article! ;-)

If they want the ball through the basket, someone get a ladder and put it through, then that’s it, everyone go read a book, spend energy on making world a better place.

Where did I say that physical activity is bad? Kids should be exercising. And there are other types of activities that schools could provide to teach teamwork, such as group projects. You can’t deny the fact that sports get in the way of actual learning when you have teachers not giving out homework the day before a big game or going easy on the jocks when they didn’t bother to study. Kids should be learning skills that will actually help them to get a job and to think for themselves when they get out into the real world, rather than learning how to throw a ball around while thinking they are superior because of a minor skill. All sports do is create an hierarchy that favors the kids with no real brains or talent outside of sports, and makes the smart kids feel bad about themselves when, in fact, they should be the ones being recognized for their achievements.

Though you’re right that not giving out homework before a big game does get in the way of actual learning, the minor effect of this favorism is negligible. If a jock is an absolute idiot, and doesn’t study and fails all of his tests he will fail the class regardless of what teacher he has. What you are talking about is a case where a jock might have say an B+, and since the teacher likes the football team gives him an A. In the real world, using any advantage to get on a superiors good side will be a beneficial skill. The team sport obviously will ostracize people who are unathletic. It is ignorant to think everyone attains the same skill-sets. Do you see jocks who are not musically talented complain about being ostracized? Kids who are unathletic will realize they will benefit once they uncover the special skills they are good at.
As of myself, I am a college wrestler, with a current 4.0 GPA studying pre-med my Freshman year. I ensure you, being on a sports team has not given me any strictly academic unfair advantages. It is a great way to get accepted to colleges, for it shows you are well-rounded, but on the contrary someone who is not a jock has plenty of ways they can show that they are multifaceted. I’m sorry, but I just cannot agree with your opinions. Smart people get recognized for being intelligent, regardless of their extracurricular activities.
