Does Age Play a Factor in the Value of a Person’s Life?

If killing a person is punishable by the death penalty, why is it legal to abort a baby? Who gives you the right to decide which babies get to live and which don’t? When you have an abortion, you’re hurting yourself more than anyone else – including the unborn child.

If killing a person is punishable by the death penalty, why is it legal to abort a baby? When one aborts an unborn baby, they are only putting themselves through more hardships, and because of this, abortion should be illegal. Abortion is wrong because of several reasons. An abortion can cause health conflicts, psychological pain and stress to the father, and pain to the fetus. When one has an abortion, they are only bracing themselves for the several health risks that come as the dead fetus leaves your body.

There are many health conflicts that a woman can experience after they have an abortion. Abortion prevents some women from getting pregnant again due to increased bleeding or a damaged cervix. Instruments used in abortion sometimes puncture the womb, and an injured womb can lead to future miscarriages and premature birth. Abortion also increases a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer. As a response to levels of hormones, such as prolactin, estrogen, and progesterone, breast cells grow normally, and during pregnancy, they get ready for breast-feeding. Abortion interrupts the process, and increases the chance of breast cancer. In order to avoid a surgical abortion, some women choose to take RU-486, also known as the Abortion Pill. On an article on CBN.com about RU-486, it said, “Brenda took RU-486, and then began experiencing severe pain and bleeding.” Not only does RU-486 abort fetuses, but it also threatens the life of its user. However, the mothers of unborn babies are not the only ones affected during the abortion process.

During an abortion, not only is the fetus affected, but also the father. It is not unusual for fathers of aborted fetuses to experience stress and trauma. In an article in The Valley Catholic newspaper called “Men and Abortion”, Father Gerald D. Coleman says, “We are beginning to recognize that abortion also scars men. Men testify that after abortion, they experience guilt, regret, sadness, and a sense of loss. When the abortion took place against the man’s wishes, he also experiences profound feelings of helplessness and anger.” In the same article, Father Gerald talked about two studies: one which reported a 25% failure in relationships after abortion, and the other about the effects of abortion on marriage relationships, some of which were loss of trust, emotional withdrawal, interpersonal and sexual conflicts, and an inability to conceive. Should abortion remain legal, millions of fathers will eventually go into depression. During an abortion, the mother and father are greatly affected, yet the fetus is affected most of all.

It has been proven that a fetus can feel pain during their 8th week. On AbortionFacts.com in an article about the book Why We Can’t Love Them Both by Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Willke, they stuck an 8-week old human fetus with a pin in the palm of his hand. He opened his mouth and pulled his hand away. Some may argue that the fetus may not be able to think because it has no cerebral cortex, yet a cortex is not required to feel pain, a thalamus is, and studies have shown that by the 8th week, the thalamus of a fetus has been fully developed and is functioning. If one fetus that was aborted can feel pain, there are hundreds of other fetuses that could have felt the pain of their death.

There are dozens of reasons why abortion is wrong and should be illegalized, and the said factors are only a fraction of them. Not only is the unborn fetus affected, but also the lives of those who created it. What would one think if they asked themselves, “What if I was aborted?” The physical and psychological conflicts that come with abortion are what make the act of having an abortion barbaric, and it should be made illegal.
