Does Multicultralism Work?
The effects of multiculturalism.
Its probably an age old question that really doesn’t get spoken about. It doesn’t get spoken about because if you are against multiculturalism you are considered a racist.
In todays world we are striving for peace, we are striving for a world where we can all live together in peace and harmony. In my country Australia, we are very multiculturalised. I have lived in South Australia, Victoria and NSW, I have visited many parts of our beautiful country and have seen the good and, bad integration of different cultures.
Why is it that we believe that we can change history? History has shown to us that we will always have problems with the integration of different cultures. You might say sarcastically ‘well lets just give up and not try to improve on our ancestors’, and what I would say is that we need to learn more about our world history. Lets consider how many countries were around in the 1900’s, about 60, then today in the world there is nearly 200. nearly 4 times the amount in just over 100 years. Why so many countries? you might ask, our varying cultures have all started from a differing opinion, someone once said they like green apples, and the other said they like red apples. I know it may seem a bit stupid, but as an example this differing opinion can grow to a disgust of that person and then a hatred and they will move apart. This is why there is so much dissension among the world and the continual emergence of new countries. The apple argument is a very simplistic one, but most differences all start from 1 very simple issue that was never resolved.
We should be getting smarter as the world suggests, so we should be learning to live with each other and tolerate each other but its not happening, we are only getting worse. Consider this link with Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_conflicts. The amount of war, death and conflict doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
So what is the solution? Tolerance, we need to be able to tolerate each other. Maybe I’m a pessimist or just a realist but I promise you, this will never happen. Human nature is very proud, we find it difficult to forgive, or back down from something even when we are wrong. We don’t like to be wrong and we will stand by it as long as possible. Religion is standing in the way for many to tolerate each other because you cannot stand beside a Muslim if you are a Christian, because the Christian thinks the Muslim has no hope and the Muslim thinks the christian has no hope. So their way of thinking is polls apart and will never meet unless their religions do. Therefore their relationship will always be strained by their beliefs.
Even in my own workplace lets say I am a manager and I have worked hard to get to my position and a colleague who works under me appears lazy, I will begin to dislike that person and eventually seek a reason to fire him. Even though he may be a good worker and does his best he will never live up to MY expectations.
All these things are very little and its how they all started. If you could go back to where some of these problems originated I imagine it would be so funny to see what it has become. There is a song on a TV ad talking about superannuation which goes ‘from little things, big things grow’ and that is what has happened in this world.
So how do we solve it
- Tolerance
- Humility
- Love
But really the only way you will solve these problems to me is
- Change Human nature
- Have 1 religion
- Have 1 king/President over the world who is righteous
Never!!! you may say. I say its the only way.
