Domestic Violence
Domestic violence affects the entire family. Whether the parents know it or not, they are modeling behaviors for their children that they will carry into their own adulthood.
Domestic violence is a serious matter. It can sometimes lead to death of one of the spouses. Most of the time it is the male partner that abuses the female partner. There are cases in which it is the female who abuses the male partner. I also know that there is a cycle to domestic violence. First is the honeymoon stage where everything seems great. Next, tension builds. Last, the tension escalates and then blows up. The cycle repeats itself when the individual apologies. Then the honeymoon phase starts over again.
- I learned that 58%- 85% of men who complete batterers’ programs stop their violent behavior. I also learned that 24 states developed standards for batterer programs.
- To offer support to victims not judgment or tell them to leave. Victims need someone they can feel that they can confide in and feel safe. If the victim does not feel safe, they may not seek your help in the future.
- A child development professional would be involved with the children in the case. These professionals could be the CPS workers, child care staff, or school staff. These people would be on the look out for signs of abuse. They may also be available to provide the mom with resources, such as shelter information and legal information. They may also be people who the children can depend on. If the children feel like they can trust the child development professionals, they will feel safe to confine in them.
- Minnesota law for mandated reporters requires that mandated reporters also report not only children who are suspected of being abused, but also children who may have witnessed domestic abuse. I’m not sure if this is a requirement here in California. I would hope that it is because these children are being harmed indirectly. I could contact our local child protective services to see what is required of the mandated reporter by law.
