Downfall of Uniformity
Although school uniforms may present many benefits, many argue that requiring school uniforms not only is a violation of first amendment rights, but degrades social diversity and character development. While school uniforms may exhibit many benefits such as a decrease in violence, an increase in campus security, and improved behavior; Uniforms actually suppress the underlying problems.
Connie Terry, a concerned mother, describes her experience with school uniforms, she notes, “My fifth-grade daughter used to like school, but last year her school switched to uniforms. Now when I ask her how school is going, the first thing out of her mouth is, ‘I hate uniforms.’ My daughter likes to be individual, to wear what she wants. She doesn’t want to have to wear what everyone else is wearing. It doesn’t make her feel good about herself; it doesn’t make her feel special.” Many argue that school uniforms are the solution to most problems in the public educational system, the means for “salvation” in public school.
Former President Bill Clinton, an advocate in support of implementing school uniforms in public schools, unveiled a plan in 1997 to enhance the quality of public education and decrease violence. In this plan, the integration of school uniforms would be, “one step that may be able to break this cycle of violence, truancy, and disorder,” Clinton stated (Can Uniforms Save Our Schools?). School uniforms are responsible for raising students’ grades by helping students concentrate on their work; they aid students and parents in resisting peer pressure, instill discipline, decrease theft, violence, and gang activities. Inequality is likewise diminished by the students being dressed in the same attire. There have been many instances where school uniforms have in fact decreased the number of suspensions, assaults, thefts, vandalism, and weapon drug violations. According to Education World, schools in California, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, Phoenix, Seattle, and St. Louis have had a very positive experience with school uniforms. In contrast however, school uniforms in Miami accomplished the opposite design; it was found that fights nearly doubled at their middle schools. (School Uniforms: Panacea or Band-Aid).
Psychologically, uniforms help the students focus more in school. In essence, the students are “dressed for success.” Teaching children the importance of uniforms at a young age will assist them throughout their lives; our society is inundated with uniforms and they are a part of every day professional life. Many corporations and organizations require that their employees or members wear a uniform. For example, in the military, one is required to wear a uniform. This uniform allows all to recognize them on appearance, aids in the unity of the group, and requires one to act in a professional manner because their actions will reflect the entire organization. Likewise, professional athletes wear uniforms for distinction, unity, and showy appearance. Therefore, implementing uniforms in public schools will prepare children at a young age for success.
