Downfall of Uniformity

Although school uniforms may present many benefits, many argue that requiring school uniforms not only is a violation of first amendment rights, but degrades social diversity and character development. While school uniforms may exhibit many benefits such as a decrease in violence, an increase in campus security, and improved behavior; Uniforms actually suppress the underlying problems.

The problems that have acquired the “need for uniforms” are not going to be solved through public schools and governmental intervention.  These problems should be addressed and solved by the children’s parents.  By implementing uniforms, the real problem is being suppressed; parents are not teaching values to their children.  The majority of children today spend a great part of their time playing violent Nintendo games and watching television.   They are not being taught values like our parents and grandparents were taught fifty years ago.  For the loss of values, the government is attempting to compensate by dealing with the factors that seem reasonable.  The goal for a decrease in violence and an increase in school performance is a noble one, but these values are ones that can only be instilled into the mind of a child in their early years by parents that teach by example and love.

Therefore, school uniforms do not fix the underlying problems present today in our public school system.  It is the responsibility of parents to teach their children correct principles so that school children can govern themselves by living values taught by the example of others.  Instead, children act by the example given them through television and video games, the “replacement” guardians.  School uniforms are not going to change the misbehaved and rebellious; the parents are the only ones capable.  Children must be taught values and principles.  They must spend time with their parents and feel loved.  Television and Nintendo time needs to be monitored, and very limited.  Only when the way children are taught and disciplined, will we find a difference in our schools.  Believing that school uniforms will transform the public school system is like pretending that painting the walls of a crumbling building will fix the problem of the infrastructure.  Uniforms are only cosmetic and will allow the monster of violence that society faces grow ever fierce and uncontrollable.
