Drugs and the Stupidity Surrounding Them

The war on drugs has failed, it’s time fora new approach. No more bull…

Let me ask you this before we begin, How many of you think drugs should remain illegal? And how many think they should be legal?

According to stats the results are not surprising, about 70-75% of us believe that drugs should remain illegal, but why is this? Why have we been programmed to believe this is right? Because, the government had been working since 1971 on the so called “war on drugs,” they tell us that the billions of dollars spent are spent keeping our kids safe from the drug dealers smuggling and selling drugs. The truth is it’s all bull crap. The government has led us to believe we live in free society yet they don’t give us the freedom to make our own decisions. Before the war on drugs in the 60’s a bag of heroine could be bought for 30 bucks at 5% purity, now with the black market demand that forty can get you ten times the amount at 80-90% purity. That means that since the war on drugs campaign started the price and purity has gone up 600%.

Here some more food for thought, one of the worst drugs out there causes over 20 thousands accidental death by car crashes a year, over 50 thousands deaths due to overdose or prolonged damage due to abuse, causes more then 60% of marital violence causing divorce and often criminal intention at times causing death, meaning murder. So what is this horrible drug, and why would people be so stupid to take it, well its simple this drug is perfectly legal, alcohol is this drug and yet 77% of us drink it more then a couple of time a week. So the question is why has our government allowed us to freely abuse this drug and not others, shouldn’t alcohol be illegal too?

This is a controversy that has gone on for decades so it would seem the time is now to put our foot down. We mustn’t let the government tell us we are free when they do not allow us to make free choices. It shouldn’t matter if you are for or against having drugs legalized, it should only matter that the government is not allowing you the choice to choose. You know with a bit of education people aren’t stupid, we are smart creatures, we have proved that over that last few thousand years. If we are taught that tobacco, alcohol and other drugs have side effects and long term results; People are still going to chose to do them of course, but with knowledge and help people can have access to more healthy doses and controlled amounts.

I’m not saying drugs are good in fact they are terrible but alcohol and cigarettes are terrible and we don’t lock people up for using those unless they are causing trouble. Our jails are running over with people who have committed petty crimes and the over worked police officers are running around trying to catch pot smokers.I say treat petty drug users the same as tobbacco smokers and alcohol users.

I do not agree with using drugs but I think that people should be educated well about them. I do not think that it is enough to just base making drugs legal on personal opinion alone, it should be looked at on all levels and angles. Critical thinking should be key. However whether drugs are legalized or not preaching “say no to drugs” is just as useful as preaching “abstinence”…It’s just not enough. I remember being in 6th grade going through the DARE program and I knew for a fact that half the kids in my class had done drugs and drank alcohol. Yet the whole class passed the program. Teaching people as “in depth” as possible of the effects of drugs will not mean that all people will not use drugs but ignorance will play a smaller roll in this area.
