Dumpster Diving

A new trend becomes public.

An evening out watching stone soup being made and seeing art related to its creation makes for a pleasant evening. There was a poetry reading, slide show and guitar strumming to the lyrics incorporating food ideas and all this was very informal and spontaneous. But there was a film that caught my attention by a group that is into diving into dumpsters, collecting discarded food and preparing it for their table. Do you find it odd? Well some of their cool vegetarian friends do according to them. But when you have the divide between the have and have-nots widening in the city why should this be surprising especially during this modern day recession? Who cares what people think if this group acts responsibly enough their not going to come down with cholera, salmonella poisoning or an E. Coli infection?

My guess is that they wash and cook well what is collected to eat and that whatever is rotten is obviously avoided but the idea of people jumping into dumpsters to collect trashed food pieces is not exactly popular with everybody. The group’s claim is that if the food is discarded it is theirs to pick up and what is often thrown out can be made edible in a society, which is quite wasteful; the young would be spending many hours having to work to get store brand variety and while putting less time in their studies, shall we say?

The trend does not end with food but also discarded furniture and items that can be brought to new life. What one entreprenieurial kid did was tha the altered the circuitry of a musical toy he found and out came a odd tonality. Let that be an inspiration for youth looking to recycle the past and bring a new meaning to their lives.

Great article. When I lived in Berlin I worked for the City. After work a few of the workers waded through the trash dumped. They use to call treasure hunting. Today I have also noticed the treasure has changed from lost goods to needed goods. Sad but true. And they are not the employees that are dresses for the occasion, but normal people looking for a break.

It would certainly appear to be a sign of the times.

It’s great how they’ve taken the stereotypical bum searching through garbage cans for food and turned it around into something artistic.

That is how a friend of mine survived for a short time.
At one point in my life I was desperate for food, even though I held a good job. My dog cost me more to feed than I spent on myself, but as he had saved my life, it was money well spent!
    Thanks,
