Dutch Victim Must Pay Damages Rawagede

Civil Court of The Hague in the Netherlands on Wednesday (14 / 9), the Dutch government ordered to pay restitution to nine victims Rawagede events, namely the massacre of the Dutch army during the war of independence of Indonesia in 1947.

This is the first time the court ruled the Dutch government guilty in the events that occurred in an area in West Java, 64 years ago it was.

The massacre occurred in Rawagede, Karawang regency, West Java, December 9, 1947, which inspired the poem Anwar, “Karawang-Bekasi”.Estimated number of victims killed in the massacre varies, ranging from 150 people to more than 430 people.

Although the UN has condemned the incident as “deliberate and cruel attack”, the Dutch government never punish a soldier was involved in the massacre. The Dutch government’s official report of 1968 acknowledged the “excessive force”, but argued that the act was done the Dutch army to quell the guerrilla war and terror attacks. 

New Holland acknowledged the massacre after a documentary about the incident aired in 1995. Ten years later, Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot expressed regret over a number of attacks by the Dutch troops in several regions in Indonesia in 1947.
