There was a devastating earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Many lives were lost, and here’s how you can help.

As I am sure you have heard by know, Port-au-Prince was struck by a devastating earthquake on January 12, measuring 7.0 magnitudes on the Richter scale. It has left thousands injured and asking for help. The city has also endured many aftershocks, some measuring up to 5.0 magnitudes.
The aftermath is devastating. The death toll surpasses 100,000 and even more are injured and homeless. People are left wondering the streets looking for friends and family. Homes, hospitals, schools and stores are nothing but rubble after the quake that lasted 35-40 seconds.
The country, roughly the size of Maryland, is one of poorest countries in the world, with more then 80% living under the poverty line. As you can guess, the Haitians are in no position to help themselves, therefore, many rescue operations, military units, the Red Cross, firefighters…etc are in Haiti this very minute trying to help the devastated residents.
The earthquake, the worst Haiti has experienced in 200 years, also affected many surrounding cities, as far as Miami, Florida and eastern Cuba.
Witnesses say that the entire city was instantly covered in smoke and rubble and was obscured for more then twenty minutes.
In a country of nine million, many have been affected by this earthquake, which officials are saying occurred only six miles underground.
This is not the only natural catastrophe that has struck Haiti; they’ve been hit by several hurricanes that have taken many lives also.
