Eve-Teasing: Limiting the Independence of Women
Bringing the deformed face of our society into limelight.
Yesterday, while enjoying a perfect evening stroll with my hubby, I happened to face a small incident of eve teasing! Should it be right to call this incident small?? Well, I don’t think so! Though, I just simply ignored the eve-teaser and his comment, the incident left me with thoughts about eve teasing and the dilemma of all the girls, who face it every minute, day and night! The moment, a girl puts her step outside her home; she has to prepare herself for a day of hardships, troubles and these eve-teasing mongers!
Where is our society going?? In what direction, is it heading? A society, which we term proudly as the advanced and modern society, does it really deserve these very adjectives? What I am not able to understand is that what pleasure do these eve teasers gain by passing lewd remarks to a lady standing in front of them? Why can’t these men respect a lady’s privacy and reputation? Where have all those chivalry rules gone?
To top it all, some so called ’society concerned’ people blame the girls for inviting the remarks by eve teasers! Girls are given the copies of rules and regulations for dressing up properly, for walking properly, for talking in a specific way and what not!!! But, what these people forget is that even when the girls behave in this so-called proper manner, they have to become victims of this social evil! In fact, in most of the cases, girls who have been victimized have been the ones, who were dressed in an appropriate dress and didn’t even do a single act of inviting the eve teaser’s attention! Phew! What hypocrisy???
I guess, the only solution to this problem is of punishing the eve teasers in such a manner, so that none of the future eve teaser even thinks of doing so! Otherwise, the times are not far off, when people would again start restricting the movements of girls, of stopping their education and keeping them in burqas and ghungats! So, for the sake of the society, we need to somehow put an end to this social evil or be ready to face the consequences!
