Father Knows Best

A father offers an alibi to save his son and two other boys from being charged with animal cruelty only to find that he may have landed them in even more trouble.

Remember the Old show Father Knows Best? The dad in the series was always wise and gave his children sage advice as well as always saying the right thing to make any situation better. It seems like in real life even the most well meaning father, may lack such wisdom and skill as was possessed by the television dad’s of yore.

Take for example, a real true life situation that took place a couple of months ago near Deer Lake, Newfoundland. The father in this case, did every thing he could to help out his son and two other boys from being accused of a crime they didn’t commit, only to discover that the alibi he provided may have done them more harm than good.

It all started when a citizen in Deer Lake called the authorities to report a baby moose down. The citizen claimed that he had seen three boys, who he named chasing the moose with their bicycles and hitting it with sticks.

The baby moose was near death and had to put down, which fueled the anger of law enforcement and an investigation was launched. The three boys named by the citizen who made the report were the prime suspects in the case.

Then the father of one of the boys stepped forward and provided an alibi for his son and his two friends. He insisted to the authorities that these three boys did not and could not have harmed the baby moose. The reason he gave for their innocence in this crime was that the boys were in a local church at the time. Vandalizing it.

Further investigation on the moose incident revealed, that although there was a young thirteen year old boy on a bike near the moose and he did prod it with a stick, he did not injure the moose in any way but was trying to get it to stand up.

The moose it seems, had gotten separated from it’s mother and being too young to be on its own, had simply fallen down too weak from hunger and the elements to survive.

As for the three boys initially accused in this crime, their names have cleared. However, there is now an ongoing investigation into the church vandalism and if the police find any damage to the church or it’s property the boys will be charged with mischief.

I find myself wondering how the father knew what the boys were up too on the day in question, as it would appear that the church had not reported anything.

Perhaps in this case father really does know best.

What an alibi! At least the father told the truth.

You know what really bugs me (although probably not so much in this story) is when kids do wrong and their parents try to cover for them rather than making them pay for their crime…
anyhow as sad as I am for the baby moose at least it wasnt tortured to death.. poor thing.

I agree with Brenda, parents should never try to cover for their kids. What does that teach them? Good article, Martie.
