Five Charities Worth Supporting

There are so many charitable organizations that send out requests for help that a person can become overwhelmed by these same requests. How does a person decide which charities to support? Find out what criteria a person should use in making this decision by looking at this list of five worthwhiled charities.

Their website is slick, however some may find it confusing or difficult to load, depending on one’s Internet connections. Donations are accepted through their website and many companies will match what their employees donate. See if your employer is among them. Those who donate a monthly gift to their safe home, in The Philippines, are given updates on the progress of the girls living there. I have included this charity as it is one place that is actually trying to do something about the serious problem of child sexual slavery, an issue that many do not know about, and that some would rather ignore, because it is such a horrible issue to think about.

World Wildlife Fund’s Adopt an Animal Program

When you adopt an animal at The WWF 82 cents of every dollar that you donate goes towards the conservation of that animal and its habitat. This is actually a large percentage in the world of charitable donations. These conservation efforts not only help the specific animal that you choose to adopt, they also help other species as well, including your fellow humans.

WWF has a list of 100 species that one can adopt. Adoptions packages start as low as $25US. Although the adoption is symbolic, you are given a picture of the animal you adopt and species information. With larger adoption packages you are given a plush toy representation of the species that you have adopted. This symbolic adoption allows WWF to continue its work protecting habitats and species worldwide. WWF also works to prevent and end poaching. You can find out more about their other efforts and programs at their website.

SPCA

Although this is an international organization, it has many local branches. I have given the website for SPCA International as a link, however I urge you to find your local SPCA if you wish to donate time or money. SPCAs are organizations that are concerned with the welfare of animals worldwide and locally. At SPCA shelters you can adopt a pet, rather than buying one from a pet shop. These include many types of pets, everything from pure bred dogs and cats to reptiles or birds. You can volunteer at SPCAs to help provide care for the animals that they take in. You can give support in the form of donations of food, toys for the animals, or spaying and neutering of the animals they acquire. They will also accept monetary donations that help in the care of their animal guests.

Most SPCAs are not “No Kill Shelters”, however they do their best to re-home animals. Donations to, and adoptions from, SPCAs help them to save more animals and can prevent the euthanasia of some of the animals that have been dropped off at their shelters. A visit to their website will allow you to see how you can help The SPCa on a global or local level. I have included them on this list for the reason that SPCA is both a global and local charity, as such you can see how your donation is helping in person, if you so choose.

Remember when giving to charities it is important to give responsibly. Remember one person can not do it all, as it takes everyone. Give what you can, while insuring the well-being of yourself and your family. Do not give until it hurts, give to end hurt. After all, the ultimate goal is to end hurt and suffering in the world.

Mark, there are worthwhile charities out there but we do have to look carefully to see how much of the donations are going to the charity and check the salaries of the folks running the charity. I have had a few surprises when looking behind the facade.
