Freedom or Security? ~ The Debate
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." ~ Benjamin Franklin ~
I agree that those who are willing to give up the freedom that this country has, deserves neither freedom or security. Would you you throw away the freedom, Americans fought for during the American Revolution? Was it all for naught? Very much like the societies in The Giver by Luis Lowry, Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave, who for the sake of security, had nearly all of their freedom restricted and even in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.
In The Giver, their dystopian society is mark by the fact that their jobs are chosen for them at birth and you never know who your real parents are. There are no emotions and colors do not exist beside in one entity who has the collective memories of the heinous past.
In Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave, those who are chained are comfortable of their surroundings hence they are safe from the evil outside because they remain ignorant. As they remain in their chains, they are more safe because they allow their freedom to be restricted. The one that breaks free goes on the journey motif and descends into the light and the unknown where few dares to venture away from the safety of their homes.
In Fahrenheit 451, people don’t read because that would stir up dangerous ideas in people’s head. So books are burn up by the “firefighters” and nobody dares to questions the government. Those who question the government have long since “vanish”. The government censorship allows them to keep the people safe because they don’t get any dangerous notions to be an individual because god forbade that you are different.
Like in The Giver, the general populace never experience emotions and are just going though life without a care in the world. Do we really want to live in a world where the government exerts this much control and influence over our daily lives? What was the start of all this? Is Big Brother watching us?
