From Thanksgiving to Christmas: A Look at Society
Examining how the holidays influence our daily lives.
In Canada we have Thanksgiving in October while in the US it is in November, but what does this all mean? The holidays are a time for family and family events that lead up to the end of the year. It is in essence a “summer vacation” in the middle of the winter. A very modern trend is that in the US, Christmas and Thanksgiving are becoming less of holidays and more of a commercial scam produced by retailers.
Sure enough, amidst the commercialization of such holidays there is becoming less and less family time. This lack can lead to a decrease in moral, a decrease in productivity, and a decrease in profits leading to a recession such as the one we are in now.

Whats next in a ever commercially dependent society may just be the commercialization of your summer vacation. After all why spend your holidays on the beaches when you could be spending them shopping at your local Wal-Mart. Perhaps this is how we are meant to live ever drowning out our own misery by making more misery in our lives.

Ironically, we the people of democracy feared the government censorship of Communism. Today, it may seem the government censorship is not necessary as we are so distracted by our material needs that we end up not critically assessing our situation in the world today. Consequently, we create more problems for ourselves, leading to a situation induced by our own pleasure instead of war and pain.
