Games Destroyed Us

by ahzaz in Issues, August 23, 2007

I have been playing games all my life. I’m not like some old hermit, and actually a teenager, who has a life.

I do other stuff, like play sports, hang out, and computers stuff like animations, etc. I recently realized how my life has been going. I have been playing for more than 3 hours a day, wasting my time on stuff that will never help me in life, but why? What was my reason? It’s simple what all gamers need, enjoyment. Some gamers play MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online role playing game) because they feel like they have a life in which the have a meaning, luckily, I’m not one of them. Some gamers feel power from playing games, the feel the power of being able to swing something 1000x their weight. It’s amazing on how games can affect people.

Some time ago, there was a child, 14 years old. He was playing grand theft auto in his room for several hours straight. Something affected his brain, probably the graphics, and he became mental. He robbed a policeman’s gun, shot many bystanders, policemen, and in the end, shot himself, because he knew that jail life is no life at all. Grand Theft Auto ruined his life; it made him murder innocent people, then commit suicide. Games can do that to people.

Heard about the story about the boy that killed a nurse carelessly? Maybe, but it’s a sad, bloody tale. This 18 year old boy killed a nurse, by attacking her 72 TIMES! He slashed her 72 times! Why? Here is the full story. This 18 year old was in his room playing manhunt 2 on the playstation 2 for many hours, and he attacked a nurse who was on a cigarette break. He was testing his moves. He got life sentence. That was it, 2 people whose life was destroyed by video games, and countless people whose life was affected.

Some people are full of bad ideas, like the people that want to put manhunt on the Nintendo Wii, which makes everything a million times worst. All the moves that were once done with a controller are now going to be as real as it can get. I can admit it, I let my little brother watch when I play games that are 13+ or 17+ because he’s my little brother, and as far as I know, if he’s like me, they don’t affect him either. But think about it, Blood and Violence should be kept away from small children, because they can affect them severely.

But games don’t affect everybody. We all know about the Virginia Tech incident, right? The person that did that attacks, was indeed a psychopath. He was also affected by video games, but he had other issues also. We people with normal lives don’t get affected easily, and we actually have resistance against it. You can do something to stop more incidents like Manhunt, Virginia Tech, and GTA. All you have to do is stop the people that do these things. When you have classmates, who are underage to play these games, and obviously have issues, them stop them, tell them to control themselves, talk it out, or ask a counselor for help. It can make a difference. Many lives could be saved. Remember, life is precious, and don’t let someone waste yours.
