Genetic Engineering
This was my point in a debate class. I was assigned the topic and position. I tried to stress the fact that ethics doesn’t have any relevance, as the issue was Resolved: Parents have the RIGHT to choose the genetic makeup of their child.
Parents have the right to raise their children however they wish. This decreed in several documents, such as in Parents Rights by The Rutherford Institute.
“Parents have a constitutional right to direct and control the upbringing of their children, and laws or governmental actions that unreasonably infringe the rights of parents to raise and educate their children according to their own values are constitutionally suspect,” (Parents)
Parents’ genetically engineering their own children is part of the child’s upbringing, and should be done however the parents seen fit, as the upbringing of a parent’s child is to be accomplished within the ideals of the parent’s values. This is clearly stated in this same document; “the Supreme Court has ruled that parents have a fundamental right to control the upbringing and education of their children…” (Parents) which is why parents clearly have the right to genetically engineer their children, in accordance with their own values.
We cannot be blinded by certain perceptions of ethics in order to justify letting children die or live diseased lives when we have the means to treat them. There are no laws against it, the parents have the right, and, most importantly, the children have the right. Ethics really has nothing to do with the question that we are answering, so any claim regarding ethics is automatically dismissed. It is ridiculous and backwards to let children die, all in the name of misplaced ethics.

This was for a debate, thats why their are so many sources. The issue was Resolved:Parents have the right to choose the genetic make-up of their children. I was assigned pro. This was meant to knockout any arguments relying on ethics.
