Global Solution for H1n1

A report I did drafting a possible global solution for distribution of the vaccines for the h1n1 virus. I wrote this from the viewpoint of Kenya.

The sudden return of the swine flu devastated the whole world. According to the CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control), on October 31, 2009, there have been 44,555 cases of the H1N1 virus confirmed and 1,205 deaths reported in the U.S. Moreover, what’s worse is the fact that a new strain of the H1N1 virus, known as A/H1N1, has been found.

As the deadly H1N1 virus spread rapidly across the globe, one of the countries that suffered drastically was Kenya. Recently, Kenya had been selected as one of the 100 countries that will be beneficiaries and receive vaccines from WHO (World Health Organizations). When the first case of the new strain of H1N1 had hit Kenya, Public Health and Sanitation Minister, Beth Mugo, tried to calm the public by declaring that there is: “No cause for panic.” However, as the situation is now, Kenya will need to take precise measures in order to fight this virus.

The need for countries to help out and vaccinate the whole world instead of just caring for one’s own country is essential and acknowledged. However, because of the shortage of vaccines available, it is impossible to give vaccines to the whole world. As a result, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization has proposed that vaccinations should be prioritized. The SAGE recommended that all countries should immunize their health care workers first, and then determine their order of priority based on each country’s specific needs. Most importantly, however, is the need for countries such as the U.S and China, to aid in vaccinating the world by donating vaccines or funds to organizations such as WHO. These donations would then be distributed to poorer countries throughout the world. Although it is impossible to vaccinate everyone, this can ensure that all countries have sufficient vaccines and vaccinate the people who really need it.
