Former UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, Prime Minister of Greece, George Papandreou, the former EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, former leaders of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, and South American writers Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa, require governments adopt new laws.

Global war on drugs has failed and governments worldwide should consider legalizing marijuana and other controlled substances, said a committee that includes former heads of state, a former UN secretary-general and a leading businessman, tells HuffingtonPost . 24-page report was prepared by the Global Commission on Drug Policy, a panel of 19 people, writes Hotnews.ro.
Rather than punish them which says that consumers “do not harm others, ” the Commission said that governments should end the criminalization of drug use, to provide medical services and treatment for those in need and to enforce legal models which will undermine the influence of organized crime syndicates.
According Realitatea.net, petitioners say that the current UK drug laws proved useless to society. The letter was signed by former British Defense Minister, Bob Ainsworth, and former chief of police.
Last year over 80,000 Britons have been penalized or convicted for drug possession. UK law prohibited substances divided into three categories, depending as they are harmful to humans.
